Landforms Wasatch Mountain State Park is one of Utah’s most popular state parks. It is located close to Salt Lake City and offers beautiful scenery and activities all year round. Activities include golfing, hiking, biking, camping, horseback riding, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, and snow shoeing. The Great Salt Lake is the largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River. The Great Salt Lake is about 75 miles long and 35 miles wide. It is salty because it does not have an outlet. Tributary rivers are constantly bringing in small amounts of water. Once in the Great Salt Lake, much of the water evaporates leaving the salt behind.

Hogle Zoo Utah’s Hogle Zoo dates from 1931 and is located at the mouth of Emigration Canyon. The Zoo is one one the most visited attractions in Utah and the top paid tourist attraction in Salt Lake City. It covers 42 acres of land where visitors can view over 800 animals.
Clark Planetarium Clark Planetarium's mission is to create and present experiences that teach about space and science. You can enjoy the 360- degrees of entertainment offered at the Hansen Dome Theatre. This domed theatre lets you explore the universe in ways you wouldn’t have thought possible.
Utah Olympic Park The Utah Olympic Park, in nearby city Park City, was the site of the 2002 Olympic Bobsled, Luge, and Ski Jumping competitions. Visitors are treated to tour of the park, athletic training sessions, 70 miles-per-hour bobsled rides, zipline rides, Quicksilver alpine slide rides, Olympic museum, and freestyle aerial and ski jumping shows on Saturdays.
Kennecott Copper Mineand Vistors Center Kennecott is the second largest copper producer in the United States. It produces about 300,000 tons of refined copper each year. Located 28 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, the mine is 2.75 miles across and 0.75 miles deep. The visitors center is one of Salt Lake City’s most popular tourist attractions. The visitors center opened in 1992 and has hosted more than 2.7 million visitors.
Park City Ski Resort Park City Mountain Resort, located 35 minutes from Salt Lake City, is one of the best mountain resorts in North America. It was named “#1 Family Vacation” for 2011-2012 by SKI Magazine. The Resort offers skiing and snowboarding in the winter and hiking and mountain biking in the summer.

2002 Winter Olympics The Winter Olympics were held in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2002. For the first time in Olympic history, the medals depicted individual sports. On one side of each medal is an athlete emerging from ice accompanied by the Olympic Rings. The other side is the Greek goddess Nike holding a victory leaf over a picture of the event for which the medal was won, and the Salt Lake 2002 emblem and the name of the event.
2002 Winter Olympics Salt Lake City in 2002 transformed from Utah’s Capital into a Winter Olympics host city by building new venues, re-purposing old ones, and preparing for tens of thousands visitors each day. Salt Lake 2002 spent more than $170 million to create venues that are still used today to train athletes going to the next Winter Olympics. The Oval, known as the “fastest ice in the world,” trains speed skaters while the Olympic Park provides facilities for ski jumping, bobsledding, and luge.
History The Donner Party, a group of pioneers, traveled through the Great Salt Lake Valley a year before the Mormon pioneers. This group had spent weeks traveling on difficult terrain, cutting a road through the Wasatch Moutains, coming through Emigration Canyon into the Salt Lake Valley on August 12, 1846. This same path would be used by the Mormon Pioneers, and for many years after that by those following them to Salt Lake City. Salt Lake City was originally settled by Mormons to be the “New Zion” according to church leader Brigham Young. Young had led 143 men, three women, and two children who were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to present day Salt Lake City to permanently settle a religious community.
