  1. Class of 2017Senior Parent Night By Erika Molina, Senior Counselor

Keeping you in the loop! 10/3 -10/7 -Senior Presentations in all civics and economic classes. 10/1 -11/30 - Counseling team and College Boost will assist seniors with college and financial aid applications. 10/17- 11/30 –Individual meetings with all seniors to culminate 4- year plan. 11/14- 11/18 - Meeting with seniors that are receiving “D’s” and “F’s” in required classes. 5/1-5/13 - Meeting with seniors that are receiving “D’s” and “F’s” in required classes.

  5. Steps to Register • Go to CC website and register. Await for student ID# • If your student has special needs, contact the Disabled Students Program & Services office • Take placement test (may be exempted) • Attend Orientation • Meet with a counselor to create a semester plan • Register for classes • FAFSA application before March 2nd

Placement Test All seniors must take the placement test in order to register for classes (see college website for exceptions). • Seniors must first register online and receive their campus ID# in order to register for the placement test. • The English, ESL, and math tests are not "pass or fail." • They measure proficiency in English and math to determine proper placement. • It is very important that students take this seriously. -There are restrictions on re-testing. • Test sessions are 2.5-3 hours in length. -English and math tests are in the the same session.

College Boost is back effective: 10/11-11/30, 1/10-3/2 and 3/28-5/5 Located in the library Tu & Thu 1:00 – 3:30 Wed 11:45- 2:30 (Always available during lunch!) • College students will help you fill out your CSU and/or UC Applications • Many students will be called into the Library to start the application process. • Parents are always welcome!

  13. CSU/UC/Private Schools SAT/ACT Requirements • All CSU’s, UC’s and most private schools require the SAT OR ACT • A few select majors such as Engineering may require SAT II’s. Make sure you are aware of what you need • Upcoming SAT dates are Nov 5 and Dec 3 (CSU: SD,SJ and SLO will not take Dec) • Upcoming ACT dates are Oct 22 and Dec 10 (CSU: SD,SJ and SLO will not take Dec) • If you plan to take the December SAT or ACT check to make sure your college accepts it • SAT sign up = www.collegeboard.org • ACT sign up = www.actstudent.org • Fee waivers are available at the guidance office. Come see if you qualify.

Letters of recommendation • Not required for CSU’s, UC’s or community colleges • Required by most private schools (Secondary School report) • If you need letters of recommendation, let your teacher or counselor know at least 4 weeks prior to the due date • Provide us with a resume/brag sheet – forms available in the College section of the Guidance webpage.

  15. Cost of Attendance TOTAL cost of attendance (including tuition, room and board, health care, books, personal expenses and transportation) • UC: approximately $33,400 • CSU: approximately $26,741 • Community: approximately $13,969 • Private: approximately $50,470 or more

  16. Factors to consider when choosing a college • Size - What is the total student population? What is the average class size? • Location - Where is the school located? Urban, suburban, rural • Academics- What majors and degrees are offered? • Sports/Social Activities - What clubs, student organizations, sororities, and fraternities do they have? What types of athletic teams do they have? • Cost - What is the total cost including tuition, room and board, books and other student fees? What types of financial aid are available?

  17. How do I pay for college???

FAFSA-www.fafsa.ed.gov • It became available October 1stand is due March 2nd • Everybody is encouraged to fill it out regardless of incomeas it will determine if you are eligible for grants, scholarships and/or loans at each individual campus. • The Calgrant applications should also be submitted before March 2nd as wellto compliment the FAFSA. • FAFSA will send your info to colleges you listed and once you have selected your school you will get a financial aid offer from them

CSS Financial Aid Profile • Completed online via: www.collegeboard.org • Required by over 300 colleges • The fee for the initial application and one college or program report is $25; $16 for additional reports • Fee waivers are granted based on use of SAT fee waiver or on the information entered on the Profile application.

  21. Middle Class Scholarship for CSU’s • Must submit FAFSA/Dream Act application by March 2nd deadline • Students must apply every year • Income: $156,000 or less • Assets: $156,000 or less • Only students who have less than 40% of their CSU fees covered by grants and scholarships

AB 540 www.maldef.org • Law that allows undocumented students to pay tuition • at the California residents’ rate • Requirements: • Attend a California High School for 3 or more years; • Continuation schools, charter high schools, private schools, and adult education programs may be acceptable • High school diploma or GED • Register or be currently enrolled in an accredited • college or university in CA • Sign a statement with the college or university (Not with • INS) stating your intent to apply for legal residency • The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 is a federal law regarding the privacy of student records • and the obligations of the institution, primarily in the areas of release of the records • The school cannot legally share this information with third parties, especially INS

California Dream ACT • AB 130 • Effective January 1, 2012 • Allow students who meet AB 540 criteria to apply for and receive private scholarships by the public colleges and universities • AB 131 • Become effective January 1, 2013 • Allows students who meet AB 540 criteria to apply for and receive state-funded financial aid • Institutional grants • Community college fee waivers • Cal Grant and Chafee Foster Youth Grant

Admissions are conditional! • Must pass all classes in order to complete graduation requirements • Check your email frequently and stay on top of deadlines • Community College/Trade School/ Other • Must pass all classes in order to complete graduation requirements

Senior Year Timeline October • 1- Cal State application are accepted, UC applications available to start completing • 1- New start date to begin FAFSA, submit ASAP to maximize chances for aid. • 22-ACT Test • 25-SAT Late Reg Deadline for 11/5 Test • 26-Financial Aid Night @ Pacifica HS 6:00-7:00 • -College Boost available in the Library • -Early Decision/Action deadlines

Senior Year Timeline continued… November: (College Boost available in Library all month) • 3-SAT Registration Deadline for 12/3 Test • 4-ACT Reg Deadline for 12/10 Test • 4- Senior Lock-in • 5-SAT & Subject Tests • 18-ACT Late Reg Deadline for 12/10 Test • 22-SAT Late Reg Deadline for 12/3 Test • 30 – UC and Cal State application deadline.

Senior Year Timeline continued… December 2016 • 3-SAT & Subject Tests • 10-ACT Test • 14- Adopt-A-Child • - Most private college applications are due at the end of this month January 2017 • – If required by colleges, request 7th semester transcripts to be sent to them ASAP. • Submit official SAT/ACT scores to CSU’s/UC’s

Senior Year Timeline February • Complete FAFSA • Complete CSS/Financial Aid Profile for private schools requesting this • Some acceptance letters may arrive. • Don’t panic; many decisions are not mailed out until April • Continue applying for scholarships • Request 7th semester transcripts from your high school (ONLY if your college is requesting them) • Register for GWC OCC, Coastline Placement Exam @PHS (TBD)

Senior Year Timeline Continued- March/April • FAFSA deadline is March 2nd! • Deadline for registering for AP tests is March 18th • 4- Senior Dinner • Colleges admission offers and financial aid awards mailed/emailed out (keep track of acceptances, rejections and waitlists). • Weigh all the factors and use your judgment to choose the college that will be your best fit- ACADEMICALLY, SOCIALLY AND FINANCIALLY • Attend senior Preview Days and Open Houses. • Community College- Register for placement exams • Register for mandatory CSU orientation.

  31. Senior Year Timeline Continued- MAY • 1-AP Exams Week 1 • 8- AP Exams Week 2 • Formally accept admission to one college by May 1st! • Submit housing forms, deposits and other necessary paperwork (Send your deposit to only one school!) • 20- Prom • Satisfy EPT and ELM requirements for CSU’s (varies by campus) • Request that your final transcript be sent to your college

  32. Senior Year Timeline Continued- June • Send thank you letters to everyone who helped you in the application process. • Keep your grades up and finish strong! GRADUATE! • 19 Senior Breakfast • 20- Graduation! See you all there!!!!!!
