  1. Does Religion Make People Crazy? John 8:48, 49; Acts 26:24, 25

  2. Case Against Religion: A Psychotherapists View and the Case Against Religiosity by Albert Ellis • Dr. Ellis presents his conclusion that "unbelief, skepticism, and thorough going Atheism not only abet but are practically synonymous with mental health." Introduction by Jon G. Murray.

  3. Does Religion Make People Crazy? • “Religion is the major cause for much of the mental illness in the world…Religion causes poverty and lack of intellectual development…Religion is the antithesis of mental balance and is opposed to clarity and celerity of mind.”

  4. Does Religion Make People Crazy? • “The Church has done some terrible things in the past. The Crusades, the Inquisition, the Salem witch trials, and other events in Christianity’s history have had horrible aspects. Christians have tortured, maimed, and violently killed those with differing beliefs. Even today, televangelists and others use the name of God to reap huge profits, while priests are committing horrible acts of pedophilia. Criminals use the name of God to justify their horrible crimes. • Nonbelievers often point out the carnage and death Christians have caused in the past and present” (Evil Christianity, p. 1)

  5. Bill Maher: "I always call religion a neurological disorder. I really do believe that. I mean it's not criticizing. I'm just saying if you took religion out of it and somebody went to a psychiatrist and said you know I believe in you know this crazy, illogical thing, the shrink would say, well you have a neurological disorder. And you need to really get therapy or take a pill."-- CBC News Indepth

  6. Religion a model for psychiatric delusions . Helps understand crazy peopleMonday, 14 July 2003 @ 13:45:00 EDT • STUDYING the mechanisms of religious belief could lead to a better understanding of what goes on in the minds of people with psychiatric delusions. An international conference in Sydney this week will hear that some religious beliefs including that a virgin gave birth to the son of God qualify as delusions. Macquarie University PhD student Ryan McKay, who has been studying under one of the country’s leading authorities on delusions, Prof Max Coltheart, said the idea that religion was a delusion dated back to Sigmund Freud some 100 years ago. In his presentation to the Cognitive Science Conference today, Mr McKay will outline the latest thinking on how religious belief relates to delusion.

  7. 2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV) For God hath not given us the spirit of fear but of power and of love, and of a sound mind (sophronismos “disciplined” “self-controlled” “sound mind”).

  8. Does Religion Make People Crazy? • The gospel imparts understanding. The Bible informs man of his origin; purpose; and destiny(Gen. 1, 2; Eccl. 12: 13; Matt. 25: 46).

  9. Does Religion Make People Crazy? • The Bible provides the remedy for guilt. God offers true forgiveness (Acts 2: 38; I Jn. 1: 7ff.).

  10. Does Religion Make People Crazy? • The Bible teaches doing good to others. Good to all men (Gal. 6:10; Titus 3:8).

  11. Does Religion Make People Crazy? • The Bible promotes and requires self-examination. Not only is self-examination taught but a standard is provided (2 Cor. 13: 5; Gal. 6:4).

  12. Does Religion Make People Crazy? • The Bible teaches one day at a time. Jesus taught addressing the problems of today (Matthew 6: 34).

  13. Does Religion Make People Crazy? • The gospel provides an order of priority. First things first (Matthew 6: 33).
