2. Learning Goal • Explain the basic style and structure of the novel. • Analyse some of the language used in Chapter One.

3. Style Vocab • Framed narrative: story within a story, with the narrative shifting back and forth between the present storyteller and the story they tell. • Monologue: long, uninterrupted speech of one character directly addressing another character or the audience. • Seems as though Changez is speaking directly to the reader but ALSO silences the American point of view. Answers back to America. The American voice, which has been the loudest, most pervasive voice in the international media since 2001 is silenced.

5. Note taking- after reading • The layers to the text can create a problem. They are intricately linked and serve a clear purpose. (Which you’ll need to figure out) • Take notes for each chapter using the example you have been given as a guide. • Each lesson you will be given reading and note-taking for homework. • We are hoping to be up to Chapter 8 by the end of semester.

6. As you read… • You may wish to highlight and write notes in your book. • Highlight emotive terms or interesting phrases. • Write notes that explain the author’s choices.

Language • Changez is very specific and deliberate in the words he uses to describe himself, America, Pakistan and when addressing the America. • mission • What are the implications of this word? • Why does Changez use it? • Lover • What are the connotations of the word, lover? Consider the other words he could have chosen. Eg. brother • Why would the American be frightened of Changez’s beard? • What happens to suggest that Changez is not religious? • (p16)

8. The American • Who is he? • Find quotes to support your interpretation. • Remember that, as a reader, you only have Changez’s descriptions and reactions to go off. • So perhaps the question is more accurately- • Who does Changez think he is?
