Brofenbrenner's Model • Brofenbrenner created a model to examine the development of a child in terms of the effect of the interlocking of the child's context and circumstances of his or her environment. • Brofenbrenner divided the context or environment into five layers or systems, which all have an effect on the development. • Microsystem • Mesosystem • Exosystem • Macrosystem • Chronosystem • Brofenbrenner recognised that changes in context are significant turning points in the development of a child.
The five systems:
The macrsosystem is said to be to be the most outer layer influencing the Childs development. The configuration of this layer includes: • Laws • Cultural values • National customs • Economic situation • Social circumstances • Foreign guidelines or policy • The effects of the macrsosystem tends to surging influence into the relationships of the other three systems. The exosystem is considered the layer of the larger social system. The child is not overtly involved in this system. • The composition of this layer do not effect the child directly as they affect the composition of the microsystem, which in end affect the child. • The configuration of the exosystem includes: • Parents occupation timetable • Community resources • medical resources and institutions • The media • community • And school systems Exosystem
Mesosystem The Mesosystem Is considered the layer that connects the different configurations or structures of the microsystem and is the connection between contexts. The Mesosystem is responsible for relating school encounters to family encounter andPeer groups to church groups Church group Microsystem Peer group Mesosystem connecting two microsystem structures.
Microsystem The microsystem is the innermost system and closest to the child. This system includes the interaction and contact between the child and his or her direct or immediate surroundings. The microsystem has an impact on the child in two ways; one toward and the other away from the child. • The configuration of the exosystem includes: • Family • Schooling • Community • Neighbourhood • Church groups • Sporting groups away toward “Bi-directional influences”
Chronosystem The Chronosystem employs the aspect of time and the occurrence of the ecological events throughout life. The Chronosystem refers to the outcome as a result of time. • The Chronosystem consists of: • The child aging • Divorce effects are the most substantial one year after occurring • Timing of the death of a loved one As time continues to evolve the child may react in a differing way to the changes in his or her environment.

Community resources: • Garbage is collected every week from Thomas's house. • The local paper with news delivered every Sunday • A local gym is available in which Thomas does not join. • The local shopping centre is in walking distance for Thomas to make numerous trips everyday for his parents catering company. • The local park Has been over run with graffiti and the play equipment had been burnt sp Thomas had never been able to play there in his spare time. • walking paths are available for Thomas to walk to the local shop safely. • Parents occupation timetable • Thomas's parents are always in the family home working. He finds no distinction between family time at night and work. They work until late hours of the night and finish when Thomas is already in bed. • The media • Newspapers are delivered to Thomas’s house so he is able to access to local news. On Thomas's walk to the train station everyday he Passes a football stadium that is covered in advertisement by the media. • medical resources and institutions • The local hospital has numerous doctors and is running 24 hours a day. • Thomas is covered by Medicare and is able to receive care when ever he needs it at this hospital • A free counselling is offered at Thomas's school as a medical resource. Community Every 3 months Thomas's community holds an annual fundraiser for community facilities Thomas's family is quiet involved in this fundraiser and his family is well known an liked in the community. Thomas has very little interaction with his peer’s outside of school. • Thomas’s teachers interact with his parents on a regular basis. Thomas's parents meet with his teachers every term. This is because his teachers are worried about his anti social behaviour and his parents are making sure he is excelling in his subjects. • Thomas church does missionary work in his neighbourhood. Family Thomas spends most of his time by himself. Family time is during meal times as his family works hard during the afternoon and night in their home restaurant. • Schooling • Thomas excels in his school. • Excellence is an important goal in Thomas's private school. • The school provides all of Thomas's favourite Activities. Microsystem • Work groups • Thomas has a job working at the local Woolworths and is highly respected for his work ethic. • Thomas has no friendship group here as his culture tells him wok is not a social time. • Church groups • Thomas and his family eat dinner with the leaders of the church two times a month and meets with his mentor once a week.
Chronosystem Thomas is at the stage where he is legally aloud to drive by himself and is learning about taking responsibility as he is almost an adult. Thomas has been abiding by his parents rules and decisions but this change in his role as a child is new to him. The values that he holds important are changing as he is now deciding them himself not told to hold certain values in high regard as that’s what his parents believe he should do. Thomas is starting to take interest in building friendships outside school and even interested in dating which is another large change as Thomas ages. Thomas is looking at his aging grandfather and seeing declining health.
