Divergent Boundaries What is a divergent boundary? • A boundary b/t two lithosphere plates that are moving apart. • Most exist on the ocean floor and have rift valleys (deep valleys at the center of mid ocean ridges) • Rifts - Where molten rock forces its way b/t cracks on ocean floors causing spreading (sea floor spreading)
Convergent Boundaries What is a convergent boundary? • It is where two plates come together or “converge”. Types • When a plate dives beneath another plate is called a subduction boundary.
Convergent Boundary Products of Subduction boundaries - Deep Sea Trench – It is a part of a subduction boundary that is the deepest parts of the ocean floor.
***NOTE*** When two oceanic plates converge, trench formation is accompanied by the formation of a volcanic island arc.
Convergent Boundaries Types Collision Boundaries: • Where two continental plates collide. May cause continents to weld. Mountain formation occurs at point of collision • Ex. Himilayas (China/India), Ural Mtn (Siberia/Europe)
Transform Boundaries Transform Boundaries – is the product of two plates sliding past each other. Earthquakes
