  1. Ecology & Environment Chapter 2

  2. Vocabulary Scavenger Decomposer Food chain Food web Energy pyramid

  3. What are the energy roles in an ecosystem? • Organisms in an ecosystem are either: • Producer • Consumer • Decomposer

  4. Producers • Organisms that makes its own food • Source of all food in an ecosystem • Plants, algae, bacteria  photosynthesis

  5. Consumers • Obtains energy by eating other organisms Herbivores = only eat plants Carnivores = only eat animals Omnivores = eat plants and animals Scavenger = feeds on dead organisms

  6. Consumers – Which is which? Label each picture as a herbivore, carnivore, omnivore or scavenger

  7. Decomposers • Break down biotic wastes and dead organisms • They return raw materials back to the ecosystem • They recycle energy! • Mushrooms, bacteria, mold

  8. Pair Share Review • Write one sentence with your pair share partner; finish this sentence: The sun is the main source of energy for producers, consumers and decomposers because ________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________.

  9. How does energy move through an ecosystem? • Energy moves through an ecosystem when one organisms eats another!

  10. Food Chains • Series of events where one organisms eats another. Lake Algae -> Bass Fish -> Eagle • Put an example of a food chain in your notes. Connect grass to you!

  11. Food Webs • Food chain shows one path of energy • Food web shows all the possible paths energy can move *Virtual lab tomorrow!

  12. Energy Pyramids • Diagram that shows how energy moves from lower to higher levels *the most energy is available at the producer level of the pyramid, as energy moves up the pyramid less energy is available

  13. Pair Share Review • With your pair share partner, complete the Energy Flow in Ecosystems worksheet. • 10 minutes! • Will correct when finished!! • No copying! Work together!!

  14. Vocabulary Biome Climate Desert

  15. Vocabulary Rainforest Emergent layer Canopy Understory

  16. Vocabulary Grassland Savanna Deciduous tree

  17. What are the six major biomes? Biome – group of ecosystems with similar climates and organisms • Desert • Rainforest • Grassland • Deciduous forest • Boreal forest • Tundra

  18. Climate Climate = average temp & amount of precipitation *Climate determines a biome by limiting the type of plants that can grow

  19. 1. Desert Biomes

  20. 2. Rain Forest Biomes

  21. 3. Grassland Biomes

  22. Prepwork • Pages 63-66 due tomorrow!

  23. 4. Deciduous Forest Biomes

  24. 5. Boreal Forest Biomes

  25. 6. Tundra Biomes
