  1. I.A.S.B.O. Data Warehousing

  2. About Integrity • Integrity is: • An independent integrator for schools, focusing on: • SIF • Data warehousing • We plan, implement, proactively monitor, and maintain SIF infrastructures for our school clients • A SIF software developer • Mainly for K12 software vendors • Also for schools given the right circumstances

  3. Celebrating 15 Year Anniversary Local presence in Central Illinois National SIF Association Leader -Technical Board of Directors -Co-Chair Membership & Marketing -Lead: Data Model Task Force Data Warehouse Task Force Transportation Work Force Participant: Implementation Task Force, Certification Committee About Integrity

  4. Traditional Data Systems • The situation in many schools and school systems is that there are a series of software applications which all may require the same data, but which have no way to talk to each other. • It may be possible for one or two applications to share data through proprietary methods, but open, dynamic and synchronized data sharing does not occur. 8. Support data-driven decision making. Find opportunities for improvement. Analyze issues. Create solutions based on data. Feedback loop: measure progress towards success. Make meaningful assessment information available to teachers and administrators. Educational Uses of aData Warehouse

  9. Educational Uses of aData Warehouse • Enter/import data quickly and easily. • Create flexible, user friendly reports. • Provide ad-hoc reporting capabilities for power-users. • Develop a foundation of capabilities on which to build.

  10. Why a Data Warehouse?Warehouse Physical Model • Manufacturing • Finished goods are created from raw materials • at a manufacturing facility purpose built • for particular products. 2. Transportation Finished goods are transported from multiple manufacturers. 3. Warehouse Finished goods from multiple manufacturers are organized and stored within a central facility.

  11. Warehouse Physical Model 4. Retail Store Finished goods are displayed for sale to consumers. 5. Consumers Shop for and purchase goods to meet particular needs.

  12. Data Warehouse Model 1. Operational Systems = Manufacturing • Gather and store raw data from specific processes • Operational Systems • Student Information System • Food Services • Library • HR/Finance

  13. Data Warehouse Model 2. Transportation =Data Integration (SIF) • Efficiently moves data from system to system • Data Integration (SIF) • Zone Integration Server • SIF Agents • SIF Objects

  14. Data Warehouse Model 3. Warehouse =Data Warehouse • Stores and consolidates data from multiple operational systems

  15. Data Warehouse Model 4. Retail Store =Ways to Access Data • Provides multiple ways for users to obtain data they need • Ways to Access Data • Web-Based Reports • E-Mail • Portal • Key Performance Indicators

  16. Data Warehouse Model 5. Consumers =Teachers, Administrators • Better use of data to analyze student performance • Visualize the “track” students are on • Use data and analytics to make decisions about instruction

  17. SIF Benefits Facilitates automatic data sharing among applications Many district applications are ready to go Eases administrative overhead Ensures data is up to date in all systems Data Warehouse Benefits Provides a systematic way to gather, store, and view data from multiple operational systems “Single point of truth” of district data Enables process improvement SIF and Data Warehousing: Better Together

  18. SIF and Data Warehousing: Better Together • Implementing SIF and Data Warehousing together… • Lowers total cost of ownership by minimizing the number of extract/transform/load processes • Ensures data is always up to date • Makes it easy to add new operational systems and data points to the data warehouse

  21. Naperville Community Unit District 203 • District profile • 18,000+ Students • 1,000+ Teachers • Systems • SIS - Maximus SchoolMAX • Parental Communications - ParentLink • Human Resources - Carter-Pertain • Transportation – VersaTrans • Food Service – Comalex • Library - Alexandria • Data Warehouse - SPSS

  22. Naperville Community Unit District 203 • Future data warehouse iterations • Iteration 1: Student Demographic and Assessment Data • Iteration 2: Teacher Demographic and Professional Development Data • Iteration 3: District Financial Data • Answer questions like: • Based on a student’s past performance, where are they headed? • How much did it cost to achieve our current academic performance level? • What components of a teacher’s professional development impact learning the most?

  23. Champaign Unit District 4 GOAL: Leverage the SIF and related Data Integration technologies to make data and information more accessible. Phase 1 • Implement SIF, Data Warehouse, and Active Directory Integration • Phase 2 • Implement Transportation and Food Services Integration • Phase 3 • Implement Special Education Integration

  24. Solution Summary

  25. McLean Unit 5 and D-87 Bloomington • District profile • 12,000+ Students • 6,500+ Students • Systems • SIS -Skyward • Parental Communications - SchoolReach • Transportation – VersaTrans • Food Service – Skyward & WinSNAP • Special Education – CRT – Filemaker Pro • Data Warehouse – Integrity Technology with Illini Data

  27. Bloomington 87

  28. IlliniData Portal Access • Non-Proprietary Solution allowing full ownership by district personnel for customization and modification • Built using Microsoft tools (MS SQL Server, MS SharePoint, MS InfoPath, MS Active Directory, MS Reporting Services and more!) • Fully customized design created via a joint effort with District 87, Unit 5 and State Farm. Talk about teamwork!!

  29. IlliniData Student Score Summary

  30. IlliniData Student Score Breakdown

  31. IlliniData Portal Design

  32. Cost-Benefit Example • Assessment Reporting • SIF capability • Data integrity and accuracy • Example • SIF is used to intersect demographic data stored in the student management system with state and local assessment results • Benefit • Administrators, principals and teachers can run reports that utilize the most accurate set of demographics for students How accurate are your current reports? How much time does it take to generate reports?
