Successful development in Germany Goal of the federal government is to double the (abiotic) raw material productivity (RMP) (National Strategy for Sustainable Development) RMP = Value added (GDP) = Direct Materialinput (DMI) Extracted + imported, used, abiotic raw material Source: 2010,

Public Governance for more RE The policy toolkit to promote innovation and its implementation Existing technological and organisational solutions for more resource efficiency are not sufficiently implemented (recycling, substitution, savings). Different policy elements can accelerate the development: VDI ZRE • Overcoming different types of • barriers for more RE • Using the innovation ability of SME’s
Goals and strategic focus The main tasks of VDI ZRE are to provide information and to identify standards of best practice into all fields of technical applications. Goals: Reduction of : consumption of natural resources • Increase of: • Value added to the economy • Number of jobs • Qualification of employees • Biodiversity and Health Main fields of action: Manufacturing Sector and Construction Sector.
The approach of VDI ZRE … is Information, Cooperation and Activation. Increasing the competitiveness of SME by realising cost-savings through RE. VDI ZRE helps to identify these potentials.
Institutional Context of VDI ZRE • VDI ZRE • project cooperation between the • German Ministry for the Environment • (BMU) • and the Association of German • Engineers • funded in the framework of the • National Climate Initiative of BMU. Excursion: VDI Guidelines (activityof VDI e.V.) • VDI Guidelines play a very important role as pioneers for international standardization: • Accessible for all market participants, they allow savings by reducing information and control costs as well as costs for adjustment and trading. • Technical knowledge can spread faster. Standards thereby facilitate contractual arrangements, commercial transactions, and serve to reduce technical trade barriers • VDI Guidelines thus help to relieve government from the duty to implement additional layers of regulations. • Today 1.800 valid VDI Guidelines extensively covering the broad field of technology. Topics range from securing loads on road vehicles to testing of optical fibres up to biomimetics and monitoring of the consequences of genetically modified organisms. VDI Guidelines on Ressource efficiency VDI ZRE currently contributes to the development of: VDI 4597 Rahmenrichtlinie Ressourceneffizienz VDI 4598 Ressourcen-effizienz in KMU VDI 4599 Kumulierter Rohstoffaufwand • The development of further guidelines is under • consideration. • Long term goal: all RE-related Guidelines become • part of a VDI handbook on RE.
