Germs Are Everywhere

1. Germs Are Everywhere Germs are everywhere! (wave hands around room) They’re on the walls and in the halls. (point to walls) They’re on the chairs and on the stairs. (point to chair) They’re on the toilet seats and on your feet. (point to feet) They are on your hands and in the sand. (show hands) They even like food; isn’t that rude? But Don’t be scared. Germs can be beat. Just make sure your hands are clean and neat!!

A sick child describes how it feels to have a bad cold. “Germs Make Me Sick” By Melvin Berger. Harper Collins, 1996. Explains how bacteria and viruses affect the human body and how the body fights them. “I Love to Sneeze” By Ellen Schecter. Bantam, 1992. A lover of sneezes describes the havoc wrought by such nasal explosions, which have the power to blow the whiskers off the cat and make freckles jump noses.

4. Dirt Boy “Dirt Boy" By: Erik Jon Slangerup,2000, Dirt Boy doesn’t like to keep clean and runs away and finds Dirt Man. Soon he returns home never to be dirty again!

5. Utensils: knife (You'll need help from your adult assistant.) 2 wooden skewer sticks large plate Fruit Kabobs Ingredients: 1 apple 1/4 c. dried coconut, shredded  1 banana 1 cup nonfat yogurt 1/3 c. red seedless grapes 1/3 c. green seedless grapes 2/3 cup pineapple chunks

6. Fruit Kabobs Directions: Prepare the fruit by washing the grapes, washing the apples and cutting them into small squares, peeling the bananas and cutting them into chunks, and cutting the pineapple into chunks, if it's fresh. Put the fruit onto a large plate.  Spread coconut onto another large plate. Slide pieces of fruit onto the skewer and design your own kabob by putting as much or as little of whatever fruit you want! Do this until the stick is almost covered from end to end. Hold your kabob at the ends and roll it in the yogurt, so the fruit gets covered. Then roll it in the coconut. Repeat these steps with another skewer

7. Bugs on a Log 2 stalks celery, rinsed and trimmed 2 tablespoons peanut butter 2 tablespoons raisins Nutrition Info Per Serving (81g-wt.): 140 calories (70 from fat), 8g total fat, 1.5g saturated fat, 2g dietary fiber, 5g protein, 13g carbohydrate, 0mg cholesterol, 125mg sodium Cut each stalk of celery in half, horizontally. Fill with your favorite filling and decorate with raisins.

8. Achoo! Faces Directions: 1.) Have the children draw a face on the bottom of a paper plate. Add yarn for hair. 2.) Use a hand pattern and copy one hand for each child. Cut the hands out or have each child cut his or her own. Adjust the length as needed. 3.) Cut the facial tissue into fourths, one piece foe each child. 4.)Let the children glue the piece of tissue to the paper hand. Then glue the hand to the face. Make sure the arm is long enough so it can cover the mouth. Supplies Needed: * Paper plate (one for each child) * Crayons or markers * Yarn * Scissors * Facial tissue (one for four children) *Glue Discuss how germs spread and make people sick. Remind the children that covering their mouths is a way to help keep others healthy

9. Tips: Having trouble getting the soap out of the molds you can place the soap-filled mold into the freezer for a few minutes. What You Need: *Some Clear, pure glycerin soap bars ( like Neutrogena) *Shape molds for soap, Playdough or candy *Pot holders and a Microwave For some real fun try putting a small rubber toy into your soap! What To Do: 1.) Cut the glycerin soap into small pieces (1 or 2 inches chunks) or grate them with a food processor 2.) Put the soap bits into a microwave safe bowl 3.) Microwave on high for 10-15 seconds. The soap should soften into a liquid. 4.) Using potholders, remove the hot liquid soap from the microwave 5.) Pour the soap into the shape molds. 6.) Allow the soap to cool for a few minutes, then carefully remove it from the mold. Soap Bars!
