  5. Background of John Mark • He was a native of Jerusalem. • His mother (Mary) held prayer meetings in their home. (Acts 12:12) • Peter may have led him to the Lord. (I Peter 5:13) • Barnabas was his cousin. • He accompanied Paul and Barnabas on their first missionary Journey. (Acts 13:5)

  6. PRINCIPLE # ONE • Quitting, because of discouragement, is not a proper excuse.

  7. Acts 13:5 and Acts 13:13 • John Mark accompanied Barnabas and Saul on Missionary Journey # 1. • John Mark left them in Pamphylia and returned to Jerusalem.

  8. PRINCIPLE # TWO • Quitting just does not pay.

  9. Acts 15:36-41 • John Mark’s quitting resulted in a split between Paul and Barnabas.

  10. PRINCIPLE # THREE • Quitting can be forgiven.

  12. Church history tells us that John Mark later became the bishop of the Church in Alexandria. • John Mark also became the author of the Gospel of Mark.
