  6. Approximate Stopping Distances at 55 MPH 200 Ft 230 Ft 300 Ft 600 Ft >5280 Ft Back Home

  7. Start Timer C. Get out of the bus and measure. B. There’s always room following a crossing – the roads are designed that way. D. Make a careful guess. A. Know the length of your bus. If you have any doubt, don’t take a chance. If it won’t fit, don’t commit. 30 29 28 27 26 25 24 22 20 21 19 18 17 16 23 13 06 15 12 11 10 09 08 14 05 03 02 01 00 04 07 At crossings where there is a stop sign or a signal on the other side of the tracks, how does the driver determine if there is enough room (containment or storage area) for the bus? Green tab below is for correct answer Info Home

  8. Each driver needs to know the length of their bus and the size of the storage or containment area on the other side of the crossing. So, know the length of you bus and add an extra 15 feet for safety! Remember, the train will be 3 feet wider than the rails on both sides. Back Home

  9. Start Timer B. Trains change speed unexpectedly. A. The train’s warning horns cannot be heard. D. An optical illusion fools the eye in judging the distance and speed of the train. C. They think the train can stop for them if needed. 30 29 28 27 26 25 24 22 19 21 20 18 17 16 23 12 06 15 13 11 10 09 08 14 05 03 02 01 00 04 07 What causes drivers to misjudge whether it is safe to cross the tracks? Green tab below is for correct answer Info Home

  10. Speed Perception Trains appear to be traveling much slower than their actual speed because of their size and mass; much like a jet looks like they are almost hanging in mid air even though their final approach speed is over 150 mph. Back Home

  11. Start Timer A. Stop at this sign. D. No trains cross here. B. Slow down and prepare to stop at a railroad crossing. C. Look and listen for trains. If you see one, decide if you need to stop or not. 30 29 28 27 26 25 24 22 19 21 20 18 17 16 23 12 06 15 13 11 10 09 08 14 05 03 02 01 00 04 07 This sign tells you to: Green tab below is for correct answer Info Home

  12. Advance Warning Sign The round yellow sign, called an Advance Warning Sign, warns drivers that the road intersects with railroad tracks ahead. This sign tells us to slow down and be prepared to stop if a train is approaching. Back Home

  14. False – Trains always have the right-of-way at railroad crossing. The laws of physics make it impossible for a train to stop quickly enough to prevent a collision Back Home

  15. Start Timer B. Try starting the bus three times, then evacuate the students. C. If the bus stalls, evacuate the students immediately. Look for an emergency notification sign posted near the crossing to call and report your problem, or call 911. A. Contact your dispatch office so they can notify the railroad, then evacuate the students. D. Call the local police and then evacuate the students. 30 29 28 27 26 25 24 22 19 21 20 18 17 16 23 12 06 15 13 11 10 09 08 14 05 03 02 01 00 04 07 If the bus stalls on a track, never try to restart the bus before evacuating the students. Green tab below is for correct answer Info Home

  16. Evacuate Bus First! Then look for this sign, an Emergency Notification Sign (ENS), posted at or near a highway-rail grade crossing, lists a telephone number along with the crossing's US DOT number and is used to notify the railroad of an emergency or warning device malfunction. 31. Start Timer B. The number of trains that cross those tracks each day. A. The speed you should cross the tracks. D. How many train tracks cross at that crossing. C.
