Current Anti-Tip Systems • Wheelie bar • Decreased maneuverability • Increased rolling resistance • Increased chair weight • Hinders ability to perform wheelies • Hinders ability to perform curb cuts • Users commonly remove bars from chair Lossing, Mobley, Spiegel http://www.bme.vanderbilt.edu/srdesign/2009/group5/ SATS Senior Design 2009-10
Smart Anti-Tip System (SATS) • Senses chair orientation, movement • Computes location of COG • If threshold exceeded, deploy wheelie bar • Wheelchair-specific threshold Lossing, Mobley, Spiegel http://www.bme.vanderbilt.edu/srdesign/2009/group5/ SATS Senior Design 2009-10
SATS Advantages • Simultaneously allows maneuverability and protection from tipping • Eliminates need for user input • No need for user proficiency Lossing, Mobley, Spiegel http://www.bme.vanderbilt.edu/srdesign/2009/group5/ SATS Senior Design 2009-10
Design Ideas Traditional System Rotational Deployment Axial Deployment Lossing, Mobley, Spiegel http://www.bme.vanderbilt.edu/srdesign/2009/group5/ SATS Senior Design 2009-10
Traditional System A bar that hovers above the ground and engages when thresholds are exceeded. Advantages: Speed of Engagement Disadvantages: Maneuverability Uphill complications Lossing, Mobley, Spiegel http://www.bme.vanderbilt.edu/srdesign/2009/group5/ SATS Senior Design 2009-10
Axial Deployment A bar that is retracted inside itself and deploys linearly beyond to wheel radius and catches when thresholds are exceeded. Advantages: Maneuverability Variable catch points Disadvantages: Speed of engagement Rewinding Implementation of catch points Lossing, Mobley, Spiegel http://www.bme.vanderbilt.edu/srdesign/2009/group5/ SATS Senior Design 2009-10
Rotational Deployment • A bar that is locked in a rotated “up” position that is released to swing down and catch when thresholds are exceeded. • Advantages: • Maneuverability • Safety/Variable catch points • Disadvantages: • Speed of Engagement • Rewinding
Project Methods • Identify problem • Research of thresholds • Various levels of “tippiness” • Research of transducers • Design of sensing system • Design of wheelie bar deployment system • Construction of prototype • Testing of prototype • Revisions Lossing, Mobley, Spiegel http://www.bme.vanderbilt.edu/srdesign/2009/group5/ SATS Senior Design 2009-10
