  1. Irregular preterite verbs have no accents Ir and Ser are the same in the preterite: EL PRETÉRITO IRREGULAR You tell which verb is being used by the context of the sentence. fui fuimos fuiste fue fueron Mi madre fue secretaria. Mi madre fue al supermercado.

  2. Hacer is also irregular in the preterite: Hice Hiciste Hizo Hicimos Hicieron Mi madre hizo un pastel ayer.

  3. Dar and Ver are almost the same in the preterite: di dimos diste dio dieron vi vimos viste vio vieron Mi madre me dio veinte dólares. Mi madre vio la película ayer.

  4. We group the other irregular verbs by the change in their stem. They do follow a pattern. • There are 3 types of stems: I, U, and J. EL PRETÉRITO IRREGULAR • All the other irregular verbs have the same set of endings: e imos iste o ieron Remember, there are NO ACCENTS on irregular preterit verbs!!

  5. “I” -stem verbs • Note: HACER in 3rd person singular (él, ella, usted) hic- changes to hiz-. hacer querer venir hic- quis- vin- This prevents a “K” sound in the verb: hico hizo • Note: QUERER changes meaning in the preterite. In the present it means “to want” but in the past it is translated to “tried” in the affirmative (+); “refused” in the negative (-).

  6. “U”-stem verbs poder poner saber pud- andar estar tener anduv- estuv- pus- tuv- sup- • Note: PODER changes meaning in the preterite. It is translated to “managed.” • Note: SABER changes meaning in the preterite. It is translated to “found out.”

  7. “J”-stem verbs decir traer -ducir dij- traj- duj- conducir: conduje condujimos condujiste condujo condujeron • Note: j-stem verbs drop the i from the 3rd person plural (ellos, ellas, ustedes): dijeron

  8. Re-cap • There are no accents on irregular preterit verbs! • All irregular verbs have the same endings! (e, iste, o, imos, ieron) • Ir and ser are the same in the preterit! • There are 3 types of stems in the irregular preterit: “I”, “U”, and “J”.
