California State University Welcome and Admissions Update September, 2008 Jim Blackburn
CSU Counselor Conference Progress Report • 2007 Attendance = over 6000 • Projected 2008 Attendance = could reach 6500
Results/Aftermath of Last Year’s Counselor Conferences • For Fall 2007, CSU enrolled 53,744 freshmen (almost 7+% annual increase in freshmen) • Over 43,000 new transfers (almost 3% increase in transfers) • Applications for Fall 2008 total over 619 K (increase despite early closing of freshmen apps)
Other Results of Our Working Together • CSU conferred 89 K more degrees last year (over 5000 of these CSU alumni “studied abroad”) • Over 2 million persons and 1/10 of CA workers are CSU Alumni Including: 65% of all CA business majors 52% of all CA communications majors A majority of all CA teachers and counselors
University Admissions Myth De-bunking • It is not hard to get into a good university! • Fall 2007 Freshman apps to CSU • 76% were admitted Only 8% were denied • 13% did not complete their app in time • Fall 2007 Transfer apps to CSU • 75% were admitted Only 6% were denied • Nearly one in six did not complete application file
Admissions De- bunking Continued • Even Among Impacted Campuses- It is not that hard to be admitted as FTF. • Admits Denies SLO 45% SD 44% 52% LB 47% 43% CPP 68% 22% Full 60% 12%
Admissions Myth #2 College is Prohibitively Expensive • Mandatory Academic Costs for CSU average • $3487 per year • This figure could increased by a third, and CSU would still be below the national average • One fifth (20%) of CSU undergrads received at least $5400 in grants in 06-07 • More than one in three (35%) of CSU undergrads received financial aid packages in excess of $5400
For some Students- the CSU is really a good deal!!!!!! • Over 1.8 BILLION dollars is financial aid was awarded to CSU students in 07-08. • CSU fees increased by less than $300 per student • But at least 127,000 CSU students experienced no fee increase
Fall 2008 Admissions Cycle opens 10/1 • Apply early • Use CSU Mentor • Have a Plan B, C, D…… • Use Re-routing if offered • Don’t Forget “CTE in “a-g”
Career Technical Courses (CTE) can be part of preparing for the CSU • Over 5600 CTE courses are on the UC “a-g” list • More CTE courses will join the “a-g” list • Completing more that about 17 “a-g” courses does not improve “chances” of CSU admissions • Having job related skills can lead to better jobs • While in college • After college
Plenty of Room for CTE, etc. • A combination of no more than 18 units will meet both CA and CSU admissions course requirements • Given a six period day- students can earn six units in addition to CA and CSU requirements
Only Six CSU campuses impacted for Freshmen in 07-08 • San Luis Obispo • San Diego • Long Beach • Fullerton • Pomona • Sonoma
Transfer Impaction for 07 08 • SLO all programs are impacted at SLO at all levels • SDSU most programs and all programs are subject to impaction, if numbers warrant. • Long Beach many programs as well as upper division transfers in general • Other 20 campuses impacted in 0 to six programs
New Stuff for 08-09 • Campus admissions differences are likely to increase, e.g. recision of admissions offers • SAT/ACT writing scores will not be used for 09-10 CSU freshmen admissions • EAP results are available on –line and on STAR Report • Only four “free” applications for a fee waiver • No paper applications have been printed
Other Important New Stuff • Freshman Applications will begin to close November 30! • Freshman Applications will close completely by March 1, 2009!! • Except for impacted programs- transfer applications will be open until goals are met!
Somewhat Centralized ACT Score Receipts • Within CSUMentor there are now two ways to send ACT scores to additional CSU campuses • Via the Mentor ACT Manager site existing scores may be redirected • Via a “check off” and “pull down” at the end of the CSUMentor application • ACT scores must first have been sent to at least one CSU campus
Things you may not know about the CSU • 17 CSU campuses have no “majority race” • CSU students “studied abroad” in 71 different nations (during 07-08) Prospective CSU students need to begin a-g in Grade 9 (or Grade 8)
SAT Score Choice and the CSU • CSU campuses use the best score(s) (together or in combination). • The is no advantage via “hiding” any scores. • There may be a dis-advantage in not sending scores in a timely fashion.
