Epithelial ingrowth rates after re-treated Lasik Junki Sawai, MD, PhD Kobe Clinic, Japan No financial interest
Purpose To compare the epithelial ingrowth rates after lifted previous flap which by microkeratomic and Intralased.
Methods The enhancement procedure was done after Lasik with microkeratome (M group) (Moria, France) or with femtosecond laser (Fs group) (Intralase FS60, AMO, US). This series included 537eyes from 309 patients, age ranged from 22 to 68 yrs. All of the case (M 315 eyes & Fs 222)was re-treated as lifting the original flap with spatula and the enhancement followed without any complication by the same surgeon(author).
Results There is shown as next slide that faint or band shaped epithelial mass accumulated under the flap in 45 eyes (14.3%) in M group and 11 eyes (4.95%) Fs group. When the severe ingrowth seen toward the central cornea, they needed doing the mechanical removal as a re-re-treatment in M group 7 eyes (15.6%), compared to Fs group none (0%).
Epithelial Ingrowth rates Fs : M= 4.95 (%) : 14.3(%) Intralased flap Microkeratomic flap
Conclusions The Intralased flap has lower epithelial ingrowth rates than that by microkeratome. We believe using IntraLase as a flap creator would be better option.
