  3. TASK – TO MAINTAIN, PMCS, AND OPERATE A 50 .CAL MACHINE GUN. • CONDITIONS – GIVING HIGHLY MOTIVATED RAIDER PLATOON IN RAMADI , IRAQ. • STANDARD – TO BE ABLE TO PERFORM ALL HANDS ON INSTRUCTIONS.

  4. SAFETY THE PARAMOUNT CONSIDERATION WHILE OPERATING OR TRAINING WITH THE M2 MACHINE GUN IS SAFETY. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT THE MACHINE GUN BE PROPERLY CLEARED PRIOR TO OPERATING OR PMCS (PREVENTIVE , MAINTENANCE, CHECKS , AND SERVICES. ) OF THE M2 50 CALIBER MACHINE GUN.

GENERAL INFORMATION • DESCRIPTION – THE 50 .CAL MACHINE GUN IS BELT-FED, RECOIL-OPERATED, AIR-COOLED, CREW SERVED MACHINE GUN, FIRED FROM THE CLOSED BOLT POSITION. • BY REPOSITIONING OF SOME OF THE COMPONENTS, THE GUN CAN BE CAPABLE OF BEING FED FROM EITHER THE LEFT SIDE OR RIGHT SIDE. HOWEVER THE ARMY ONLY USES THE LEFT-HAND FEED. • WEIGHT – 84 LBS. • WEIGHT OF BARREL - 24 LBS. • LENGTH OF GUN – 65.13 INCHES. • LENGTH OF BARREL – 45 INCHES.

  7. GENERAL INFORMATION CONT. • MUZZLE VELOCITY – 3,050 FEET PER SECOND. • MAXIMUM RANGE – 6,764 METERS. • MAXIMUM EFECTIVE RANGE – 1,830 METERS. • AREA TARGETS – 1,830 METERS. • POINT TARGETS, SINGLE SHOT – 1,500 METERS.

  9. MAINTENANCE (PMCS) • CLEAR • DISASSEMBLY • CLEANING, INSPECTION, AND LUBRICATION • GENERAL ASSEMBLY • FUNCTION CHECK • HEADSPACE AND TIMING • PMCS (PERVENTIVE, MAINTENANCE, CHECKS, AND SERVICES)

  10. CLEAR • UNLOCK THE BOLT-LATCH RELEASE AND RAISE THE COVER. • PULL BOLT TO THE REAR, TO THE LOCK POSITION. EXAMINE THE CHAMBER AND T-SLOT TO ENSURE THAT THEY HOLD NO ROUNDS. • AFTER THE WEAPON IS CLEAR RIDE THE BOLT FORWARD.

DISASSEMBLY • TURN COVER LATCH AND RAISE COVER. • PULL BACK ON THE CHARGING HANDLE UNTIL THE LUG ON THE BARREL ALIGNS WITH THE 3/8 INCH HOLE ON THE BARREL.UNSCREW THE BARREL FROM THE RECIEVER. • ENSURE THAT THE BOLT LATCH RELEASE IS UP, FREE OF THE BOLT LATCH RELEASE LOCK.THE BOLT MUST BE FORWARD.THE BACK PLATE LOCK AND LATCH ARE BELOW THE BUFFER TUBE. PULL OUT ON LOCK AND UP ON THE LATCH , ROMOVE THE BACKPLATE BY LIFTING STRAIGHT UP. • PUSH IN ON DRIVE SPRING ROD AND PUSH TO THE LEFT TO ROMOVE TO THE REAR OF RECEIVER.

  12. DISASSEMBLY CONT. • ALIGN THE BOLT STUD WITH THE CLEARANCE OF THE HOLE AND PULL OUT THE BOLT STUD FROM THE RECEIVER. • PULL THE BOLT TO THE REAR OF RECEIVER, YOU MUST PUSH UP ON THE BOLT LOCK TO REMOVE FROM THE RECIEVER. • PUSH IN ON THE BARREL BUFFER LOCK AT THE SAME TIME PUSHING THE BARREL EXTENSION GROUP AND BARREL BUFFER GROUP TO THE REAR OF RECIEVER. • PULL BARREL BUFFER AND BARREL EXTENSION GROUP APART.

  14. CLEANING, INSPECTION, LUBRICATION • TO ENSURE PROPER CARE OF MACHINE GUN IN COMBAT CONIDITION, THE GUN SHOULD BE CLEANED AND OILED AFTER FIRING OR AS SOON AS POSSILBE. THE MACHINE GUN SHOULD BE CLEANED AND OILED IN A CLEAN, DRY LOCATION. IF POSSILBE KEEP A GUN COVER ON THE GUN WHEN NOT IN USE.

  15. ROUTINE CARE AND MAINTENANCE • DISASSEMBLE THE GUN INTO ITS MAJOR GROUPS AND ASSEMBLIES. • CLEAN THE BORE AND CHAMBER, AND LIGHTLY OIL THEM. • CLEAN ALL METAL PARTS THOROUGHLY WITH CLP( CLEANING, LUBRICCANT, PRESERVATIVE).

  16. INSPECTION

GENERAL ASSEMBLY • TO ASSEMBLY THE GUN, REPLACE THE GROUPS AND ASSEMBLIES IN REVERSE ODER OF DISASSEMBLY. • REPLACE THE BARREL BUFFER ASSEMBLY IN THE BARREL BUFFER BODY GROUP. • JOIN THE BARREL BUFFER GROUP AND BARREL EXTENSION GROUP BY HOLDING THE BARREL BUFFER IN THE RIGHT HAND , WITH YOUR INDEX FINGER SUPPORTING THE ACCELERATOR..JOIN THE BARREL EXTENSION SHANK WITH THE CROSS-GROVE IN THE PISTOL ROD. AT THE SAME TIME ALIGN THE BREECH LOCK DEPRESSORS WITH THEIR GUIDEWAYS. THEN PUSH TOGETHER..

  18. GENERAL ASSEMBLY CONT. • ALIGN THE BOLT IN THE GUIDEWAYS OF THE BARREL BUFFER AND SLIDE BOLT FORWARD WITH COCKING LEVER FORWARD AND EXTRACTOR DOWN. • HOLD THE BARREL BUFFER,BARREL EXTENSION, AND BOLT AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE. GUIDE IN HALF WAY THEN POSITION LEVEL AND SLIDE IN UNTIL THE BARREL BUFFER LOCK IS ENGAGED. • BEFORE INSERTING THE BOLT GROUP, ENSURE BOLT SWITCH MECHANISM IS POSITIONED ON L FEED FOR THE WEAPON.

  19. GENERAL ASSEMBLY CONT. • PRESS UP ON THE BOLT LATCH AND PUSH BOLT FORWARD. • ALIGN THE STUD HOLE IN THE BOLT WITH THE CLEARANCE HOLE AND REPLACE THE BOLT STUD. • PLACE THE END OF THE DRIVE SPRING ROD IN THE REAR OF BOLT. PRESS IN AND TO THE RIGHT TO PUT THE HEAD OF THE DRIVE SPRING ROD IN PLACE. • PLACE THE BACKPLATE IN THE GUIDEWAYS AND HOLD OUT ON THE LATCH LOCK UNTIL THE BACKPLATE SNAPS INTO PLACE.

  20. FUNCTION CHECK • FUNCTION CHECK SHOULD BE PERFORMED AS SOON AS THE WEAPON IS ASSEMBLED. • PLACE THE WEAPON IN SINGLE-SHOT MODE • OPEN COVER AND LOCK THE BOLT TO THE REAR (BOLT SHOULD STAY TO THE REAR). • HOLD CHARGING HANDLE, PRESS THE BOLT RELEASE , AND RIDE BOLT FORWARD.

  21. FUNCTION CHECK CONT. • PRESS DOWN ON THE TRIGGER ,WEAPON SHOULD FIRE. • PLACE THE WEAPON IN AUTOMATIC-FIRE MODE. • PULL THE CHARGING HANDLE TO THE REAR AND HOLD. (BOLT SHOULD NOT LOCK TO THE REAR) • RELEASE PRESSURE ON CHARGING HANDLE AND RIDE BOLT FORWARD. • PRESS ON TRIGGER ,WEAPON SHOULD FIRE.

  22. HEADSPACE AND TIMING • HEADSPACE IS THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE FACE OF THE BOLT AND THE BASE OF THE CARTRIDGE CASE, FULLY SEATED IN THE CHAMBER. • TIMING IS THE ADJUSTMENT OF THE GUN SO THAT THE FIRING TAKES PLACE WHEN RECOILING PARTS ARE IN THE CORRECT POSITION FOR FIRING. • FIRING A WEAPON THAT HAS IMPROPERLY SET HEADSPACE AND TIMING COULD RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE GUN, OR INJURY.

  23. HEADSPACE • RAISE GUN COVER UP AND PLACE THE LUG IN CENTER OF THE 3/8 INCH HOLE AND SCREW IN THE BARREL. • BACK OFF THE BARREL TWO CLICKS, RELEASE THE CHARGING HANDLE AND ALLOW TO GO FORWARD. • THEN CHARGE THE WEAPON AND RIDE THE BOLT FORWARD. • PUT IN THE HEADSPACE GAUGE IN BETWEEN THE TRUNNION BLOCK AND BARREL EXTENSION. PUT THE GO SIDE OF GAUGE IN FIRST AND THEN THE NO GO SIDE SECOND. • IF GO SIDE DOES NOT GO IN BACK OFF THE BARREL ONE CLICK UNTIL GO SIDE GOES IN FREELY. • ONCE THE GO SIDE GOES IN FREELY CHECK TO SEE IF THE NO GO SIDE WILL GO IN FREELY. IF THE NO GO SIDE DOES GO IN FREELY THEN TURN THE BARREL ONE CLICK TIGHTER UNTIL THE NO GO GAUGE DOES NOT GO IN FREELY. BUT YOU MUST CHECK GO SIDE AND NO GO SIDE AFTER EVERY TURN OF THE BARREL.

  24. TIMING • PULL BOLT TO THE REAR WITH CHARGING HANDLE AND DEPRESS THE BOLT LATCH RELEASE AND RIDE THE BOLT FORWARD. DO NOT PRESS TRIGGER. • THEN INSERT FIRE GAUGE. • REMOVE BACKPLATE. • SCREW TIMING ADJUSTMENT NUT ALL THE WAY TO THE LEFT. NUT SHOULD BE HARD TO TURN. • ATTEMPT TO FIRE THE GUN BY PUSHING UP ON THE REAR OF TRIGGER BAR. GUN SHOULD NOT FIRE. • SCREW TIMING NUT UP ONE CLICK AT A TIME. PUSH UP FIRMLY ON TRIGGER BAR AFTER EACH CLICK. REPEAT UNTIL GUN FIRES. • SCREW THE TIMING ADJUSTMENT NUT TWO CLICKS TO THE RIGHT. • REMOVE FIRE GAUGE. • REPLACE BACKPLATE. • CHARGE THE MACHINE GUN. • THEN PLACE THE NO/FIRE GAUGE TO MAKE SURE GUN DON’T FIRE.

  26. OPERATION • LOAD • UNLOAD • CYCLE OF FUNCTION • IMMEDIATE ACTION

  27. LOAD • ENSURE BOLT IS FORWARD AND COVER IS CLOSED. INSERT THE DOUBLE-LOOP END OF THE AMMUNITION BELT INTO THE FEEDWAY UNTIL THE FIRST ROUND IS ENGAGED BY THE BELT-HOLDING PAWL. YOU SHOULD HEAR ONE CLICK. • CHARGE THE GUN TO THE REAR AND RELEASE. THE GUN IS HALF- LOADED. • CHARGE THE GUN AGAIN AND RELEASE. THE GUN IS NOW FULLY-LOADED.

  28. UNLOADING • THE GUNNER MUST ENSURE THAT THE GUN IS IN SINGLE-SHOT MODE. • THE COVER THEN LIFTED AND REMOVE THE AMMUNITION BELT FROM THE FEEDWAY. • LOCK THE BOLT TO THE REAR, ONCE THE BOLT IS TO THE REAR. THE CHAMBERED ROUND SHOULD EJECT ON ITS OWN. • EXAMINE THE CHAMBER AND T-SLOT TO ENSURE THAT THEY ARE HOLDING NO ROUNDS. THIS MUST BE DONE BY FEELING THE AREAS. • WHEN CLEAR RIDE THE BOLT FORWARD.

  29. CYCLE OF FUNCTION • FEEDING • CHAMBERING • LOCKING • FIRING • UNLOCKING • EXTRACTING • EJECTING • COCKING

  30. IMMEDIATE ACTION • PULL THE CHARGING HANDLE TO THE REAR. • OBSERVE THE EJECTION OF THE ROUND AND FEED OF THE BELT. • RELEASE THE CHARGING HANDLE TO FORWARD POSITION. • PRESS THE TRIGGER TO FIRE.
