5 Characteristics of Geography Location Place Human Environment Interaction Movement Region
Physical Characteristics Geographers look at where something is located on the earth (location) Landforms – individual features of the land, such as mountains or valleys.
Human Characteristics G’s look at social characteristics -environment – natural surroundings - impact on - changes due to humans People live near rivers- provides water, transport, and agriculture.
Regions Region – an area that shares a common characteristic. - Ex. Southern United States Some regions include several countries (language)
Tools of Geography Creating Maps. - Global Positioning Systems (GPS) – receives signals from satellites to tell exact latitude and longitude. - Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Gather many different kinds of info on the same place.
Geographic Info Systems • Can compare ground data to satellite pictures. - helps people make good decisions about how to use the land
Geography Used in many ways. - planning - decision making - Managing resources
Clues to Our Past Written Records – hard to find Artifacts – tools, pottery, paintings, weapons, and other items made by people. Fossils – remains of humans or other natural beings.
