Physical Activity in Today’s Youth • It is recommended that children between the age of 6-17 participate in 60 active minutes everyday. • Less than 30% of children reported to have actually participated in 1 hour of physical activity everyday.
How can physical activity help my child? • Helps build and maintain healthy bones and muscles • Helps reduce the risk of developing obesity and chronic diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and colon cancer • Reduces feelings of depression and anxiety and promotes psychological well-being • May help improve students’ academic performance, including • Academic achievement and grades • Academic behavior, such as time on task • Factors that influence academic achievement, such as concentration and attentiveness in the classroom.
Physical Activity in the classroom • Academotion • Studies show that following physical activity students are better able to concentrate on classroom tasks.
Physical Activity At Home • Engaging in physical has long term effects • Attention • After physical activity students are able to concentrate on classroom tasks, making lessons more effective and students more engaged • Memory • Physical Activity is said to improve memory which improves retention of information
Improving Student’s Diet • Student’s health not only depends on engaging in physical activity, but also on a healthy diet. • Proper nutrition promotes the optimal growth and development of children. • Healthy eating helps prevent high cholesterol and high blood pressure and helps reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes
Obesity in children • 1 of every 3 children in the United States are overweight or obese • Alliance for a Healthier Generation
Tips for improving student’s diet at home • Increase fruits and vegetables • 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day • Eat Real Food • Cut out fast foods/junk food • Drop Liquid Calories • Cut out sugary drinks such as cokes • Drink 8 cups of water DAILY
Improving School Lunches • Whole Kids Foundation • Mission: We support schools and inspire families to improve children’s nutrition and wellness. Given the right opportunities, kids will get excited about fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and other nutritious whole foods. • Get a salad bar in every school.
