RAF Kenley • Originally Aircraft Acceptance park in 1917-18 • 1919 - RAF Kenley • Extensive building 1932-34 • Former Officers Mess • Several famous Hurricane and Spitfire squadrons stationed here during World War 2 • RAF moved out 1978 • Now only gliders
RTCG Whyteleafe • Refurbished as Type Approval Laboratory in 1983 • Brought all individual laboratories together • As TA testing carried out by commercial Test Houses, more opportunity to do compatibility work • Now used as RA’s test facility for compatibility studies
RTCG’s “Mission Statement” • We provide the Agency with a flexible, efficient and competent investigation facility, providing technical solutions to allow other RA Business Units to meet their business needs. • Our mission is to maximise RTCG’s value to the Agency by creating a “centre of excellence culture”; through technical investigation, to help the Agency strengthen its international influence and improve UK radio spectrum utilisation.
What does RTCG do ? • Acts as internal consultancy for RA • Carries out investigations 9kHz to 140GHz • Laboratory work • Field work • Emulations & simulations • Supports RA in managing spectrum
How do we do this - 1 ? • We employ 25 staff • We carry out approx. 60 projects per year • The site covers an area of 23 acres • Open Area Test Site calibrated for 3m, 10m & 30m operation • 2 x H.P. Frequency Agile Signal Simulators • Generation of uniform EM fields up to 30V/m up to 18GHz
How do we do this - 2 ? • “ALTA SPW” terminal for simulating radio systems (UNIX) • “ACOLADE” terminal for simulating radio systems (NT4) • R.F.Screened room (max 6m x 3.6m) • Semi-Anechoic room (6.5m x 6m) • Mobile Measurement Laboratory • Fully Anechoic Chamber earlier this year

509 = Impulsive Interference -> DVB-T • Assess performance of DVB-T receivers when subjected to impulsive interference • C/H thermostats, car ignition systems • Simulate the interference waveforms using FASS • Manufacturer to use our Impulsive Interference model in testing DVB products
537/612 = xDSL and PLT • Telecommunications Systems Operating over Material Substances, aka - ISDN, xDSL and PLT • O/H drop wires can act as antennas • Unscreened twisted pair cable radiates if poorly balanced • Production/development of MPT1570 specification

566 = Optically Transparent RF Absorbing Structures • Project to design/build RF filters to reduce ISM interference • Work carried out in conjunction with Nottingham Trent University • University build - RTCG measure • Can provide 50dB reduction • May result in new product
