United States Immigration The Four Waves
What is Immigration? • Immigration is to come into. • Emigration is when you exit a country for another.
Four Waves • Immigrants came to America in 4 waves, or phases. • A wave is a period of time.
First Wave: 1607-1820 • Less than 1 million immigrants • Mostly English, Germans, and Africans.
Second Wave: 1820-1890 • Larger number of people immigrating. • German, Irish, Scandanavians, Chinese. • Settle all over the U.S. (North, Midwest, West) • As technology improves (steamship) more immigrants.
Third Wave: 1890-1930 (what we’re studying!!!!!!!!!) • 2nd largest wave in U.S. history. Many immigrants in a short period of time. • Europeans: Italians, Irish, Russians, Polish, Germans, etc. • Settle and spread all over the United States. • Third wave has a HUGE impact on the America we know today.
Fourth wave: 1930-present • Largest wave of immigrants (became large in the 1960s) • Latin countries (Mexico, Cuba, etc.) and Asian countries (Japan, Vietnam, etc)
