The D&T Department • There are eight full time teachers and two technicians. • We have four workshops with another about to be built. • There are three graphics rooms, a sixth form study room as well as a separate CAD/CAM room. • There are eighty PCs and every room has an LCD projector.
Courses Offered at GCSE • Resistant Materials • Product Design (Graphics) • Industrial Technology • Systems and Control
At school level this has meant the introduction of a double GCSE for 22 pupils in three schools. In addition to OCR Industrial Technology (Engineering) they also take OCR Systems and Control. This has been agreed with the exam board.
At Warren we have created a separate area for CADCAM with improved ICT facilities including flat screen displays. • Major equipment purchased for this area includes a Unimatics 3D router with a 4D machining head and a 25 watt laser cutter from Technology supplies. This has enabled our students to make products and components using a range of software such as 2D Design, Minicam, 3D Geocam and Galaad, as well as Prodesktop.
The Future • Pupils opting for Systems and Control are usually of average and above average ability. • This year another group has started the double award GCSE course. This will continue to generate a large number of candidates for the AVCE Engineering course which is now in its second year.
Prodesktop • Last year all of our Resistant Materials Engineering and Systems and Control students used Prodesktop to produce orthographic as well as presentation drawings of their products.
Industrial Technology Engineering :- Pupils develop workshop skills using metals and plastics. They also develop designing skills and make effective use of CAD CAM. We have CNC Mills, CNC lathes and a Laser cutter.
Pupils learn to use traditional metal working tools such as the centre lathe.
Working precisely to get a good fit and ensure a mechanism works is vital.
Plastic parts can be manufactured using the Laser cutter directly from a parts drawing – the cam and handle shown below are a good example of this work in progress..
Engineering - using CAD CAM to Design • The pupils have used Prodesktop to model their designs. • Once they have been checked to ensure they work orthographic drawings are printed off and manufacturing started.
Embossing tools • First a design can be modelled using a “linkages kit”. • Then animated to see the action.
Embossing Tools – Pupils Work • An embossing tool by Glenn Barrett - a highly polished aluminium handle with steel side plates and an aluminium base, The plunger is made using a CNC Boxford lathe. There is also a spring return.
A toggle clamp by Jane Wyard - made from aluminium, polypropylene and acrylic. The base is laser cut.
An embossing tool by Lee Konig. Highly polished aluminium parts with a laser cut acrylic front piece.
A simple design making effective use of a range of engineering plastics
A toggle clamp by Rikki Baker - Red acrylic base, aluminium spacer block, polypropylene handle.
An embossing tool by James Staerck - made from acrylic, aluminium and brass. A spring return is used on the linkage.
A clamp by Terry Marsh - this toggle clamp has an acrylic base, an adjustable brass plunger, an aluminium handle and mild steel linkages. Mig welding was used to join the sub bases together.
An embossing tool by Jack Garforth - laser cut side plates, an aluminium base and an acrylic handle. A spring returns the horizontal lever.
Systems and Control • Students design their own buggies using some pre drawn components. • Assemble and convert to orthographic and presentation drawings.
http://www.The-Warren.org • The department and its students are supported by a Website which is under continuous development. • The website includes galleries of students’ work, revision notes, quizzes, and links to other useful sites.
