DEFINING DEVELOPMENT • Economic Development – has been broadly defined as growth in total GDP and Per Capita GDP (volume and value of goods and services) • Social Development – defined as improvements in well-being of people and societies – people centred. • Development • Encompasses economic and social development. • In addition it covers political development, governance, organizational development etc. Uganda Bureau of Statistics Email: ubos@ubos.org, Website: www.ubos.org
MEASURING SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT • Because of complex nature of social development, its measurement is equally complex – composite indices used. • Indices of “well-Being” and “Happiness” have been tried but the latter not very widely used. • Focus on some factors that directly impact welfare of individuals and societies have been used as proxy for social development.
