Vocabulary Definitions • Backup – An extra copy that is saved to a flash or disk, not on the computer. • Boot – To start up a computer when it isn’t already turned on. • Bug – A programming error that causes your computer to stop working properly. • CPU – Central Processing Unit: The main part of a computer that interprets and processes data.   5. Data – Information processed by the computer. • Desktop – The screen that shows up when you first log into a computer. It usually has a “My Computer” icon and a “My Documents” icon. • Document – A file that you create. It is usually saved in a folder. • E-Mail – A communication system that allows you to send and receive messages from one computer to another via telecommunications. • Ethernet – A protocol for fast communication and file transfer across a network.

  6. Flash – An external disk that is plugged into a USB port. It is used to save your documents. • Folder – A folder that you create to use as a filing system. This makes it easy to find saved documents. • Internet – Large computer networking systems that link computers worldwide. • Intranet – Networking system that is used within a company.   7. Memory – Storage capacity on a computer. • Monitor – Screen that displays what you are working on; a form of output. • Network – Connects one computer to another and enables users to share data and resources. PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010

Server – A central computer that is used to send and receive data from computers on a networking system. • Software – Programs installed on a computer that allows you to perform different tasks (Ex. Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, etc.). • USB Port – Universal Serial Bus: A port that allows you to plug in a flash drive or other external components. PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010

Computer Components • Monitor – LCD or Plasma Screen • CPU – Holds hardware components, Memory and CPU • USB Port – Used to add external drives and hardware • Desktop – OS software used to operate the Processor • DVD / CD Player – Used to play music and download programs PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010
