R 5 Gas ballast Rotary vane pumps have to be equipped with a device which facilitates pumping of certain quantities of process gases so as to maintain their foothold in chemical vacuum applications. The most feasible solution to this is the gas ballast principle. With the gas ballast method developed by Gaede a metered quantity of gas is admitted continuously into the expansions chamber of the pump; therefore, the opening pressure of the outlet valve is already reached before the vapor is compressed to a saturation vapor pressure which corresponds to the pump temperature and condenses. The inlet of gas, usually atmospheric air but also specially selected process gases, starts immediately after the vane fitted into the rotor have shut off the expansion chamber from the intake port, reducing the negative effect which may cause a deterioration of the ultimate pressure. More easy: Low pump temperature and no or only a little gas ballast flow = condensation High pump temperature and high gas ballast flow = no condensation Vakuumschulung R 5
