A challenging environmental situation ► Current situation : massive deforestation Ghana is the largest per capita consumer of charcoal in West Africa and one of the countries in the sub-region with the most pressure on its forest resources (increased population pressure, inefficient cooking practices, inefficient charcoal production). It is estimated that between 1990 and 2010, Ghana lost 33.7% of its forest cover or around 2,508,000 ha (U.N. FAO)
A challenging environmental situation ► Current situation : scarcity of wood fuel and pollution About 80% of every household in our target regions i.e. Ashanti, Eastern, BrongAhafo regions in Ghana, use charcoal-fired metal stoves, mostly the traditional model without ceramic liners. Fraction of non-renewable biomass (fNRB) is estimated as high as 99% according to UNFCCC.
Description of Man and Man Program • ► Man and Man Enterprise initiative aims at affordably replacing current inefficient three-stone fires or traditional metal stoves with improved cookstoves in up to 250,000 households across the country : Ashanti Region (Kumasi), Brong-Ahafo Region (Techiman and Sunyani), Western Region (Takoradi), the Northern Region (Tamale) and the Eastern Region (Koforidua). • The HolyCook Stove features 40% savings in fuel cost ; it is estimated that the payback time as a results of the fuel savings is between 2 to 3 months. • Traditionalstoves vs. HolyCookstoves
Environnemental and socio-economic impacts • Fuel consumption significant reduction ECONOMY • 0.6 cedis/day • (-40%) In households: from 2-3 kg charcoal/day to 1-1.5 kg • Smoke reduction HEALTH
