The Early Days • Western Michigan Normal School was opened in the summer of 1904 • Enrollment was 117 • There were no buildings or campus • www.ur.wmich.edu/centennial/ history_timeline.html
The Early Days • In 1905 the first building East Hall was erected • The famous double tracked railway trolley was built for student transportation in 1908
Hard Times • Building was halted for over four years due to WWI • During the Great Depression enrollment dwindled and nearly closed the school
The University Days • In 1957 Michigan Legislature designated Western Michigan Normal School a University • The school now donned the name Western Michigan University • www.asle.umn.edu/conf/asle_conf/ 1999/photos/photos.html
WMU 21st Century • Western Michigan University now educates over 30,000 students • Students from all 50 states attend classes • Over 100 countries are represented by students at WMU
