Reichstag fire • The Reichstag building burnt down • Hitler Blamed it on the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) • A known communist was “caught” on the site, allegedly smelling of Petrol. • Hitler gained Emergency powers from Hindenburg as a result from his fear of communism. • KPD was thus outlawed.
Enabling Act • Hitler used his power over the SS and SA and passed the Enabling Act. • With this, Hitler Outlawed the KPD and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) • Cleared the way for the Nazis • SPD and KPD disbanded upon threat of violence from the Nazis • Hitler also passed the “Law against the New Formation of Parties” Effectively making Germany a One Party State.
Trade Unions • Hitler abolished the existing Trade Unions, taking their funds and putting their leaders in prison. • With Trade Unions removed, the workers were not given any chance to protest, while a Nazi DAF was set up.
Night of the Long Knives • With the NOTLK, Hitler removed any opposition from within his own ranks. • Prominent SA leaders were “removed” and army leaders were set up in their place. Thus, Hitler had the army’s favour while removing Röhm, who was a threat to his leadership and power.
