  2. What is Rheumatic fever? • An inflammatory disease that is caused by an untreated Streptococcus bacteria (such as strep throat or scarlet fever).

  3. Why is it an autoimmune disease? • The bacterium by the Streptococcus, triggers the immune response and the antibodies attack host cells, because it resembles part of the infection.

  4. Symptoms • Abdominal pain • Joint pain and swelling • Nose bleeds • Skin rash & nodules • Shortening of breath & chest pain • Fever • Enlarged heart/Heart murmurs

  5. Treatments • Its treated with antibiotics such as: • Penicillin • Erythromycin • Sulfadiazine • Aspirin • Bed Rest • There is no true diagnosis of this illness. Treatments reduce tissue damage from inflammation, and lessens pain and symptoms.

  6. Facts • It is responsible for many cases of damaged heart valves and heart failure. • It mainly affects children from 6-15 years of age. • It can effect the nervous system, such as involuntary movements and twitching. • It can lead to Rheumatic Arthritis or Disease.
