  2. What is Mars? Did you know… the rotational period, and the season cycles, are the same as Earth. (No it is NOT a chocolate bar! ) Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun, and the second smallest planet in the Solar System after Mercury. Mars was given the name after the Roman God of War and agriculture. Mars protected those who fought for their communities, and stayed home to raise crops for food . It is often described as the Red Planet, because of the iron oxide, in which gives it the red appearance. Mars’ mild temperament is more like the Earth's than any of the other planets. Evidence suggests that Mars once had rivers, streams, lakes, and even an ocean. As Mars' atmosphere slowly disappeared into outer space, the surface water began to permanently evaporate. Today the only water on Mars is either frozen in the polar caps or underground.

  3. Discovery During the Solar systems formation, Mars was created as the result of a disk that had once orbited the Sun. Mars has many chemical features, due to its position in the Solar System. Chemicals like Sulphur and Chloride, have been moved from the area that are closer to the Sun. Even though the Egyptians discovered Mars, a man called Christian Huygens drew Mars, and was the first to find an odd feature about it. Did You Know... The Egyptians were actually the ones to discover Mars, and it was the astronomers that later on investigated it.

  4. Climate/Temperature Out of all the planets in the solar system, the seasons on Mars are most like Earth, mainly because of the two planets’ rotational axes. The lengths of Mars’ seasons, are about twice those of Earth’s, because Earth is closer to the Sun. Mars’ surface temperatures vary from lows like -143 degrees in the winter, and up to 35 degrees in the summer. Mars also has the largest Dust Storms out of the whole Solar System. Dust Storms are caused due to a little storm in one area, or a big storm that can cover the entire planet. They could even occur underground. Did You Know... Soil and rocks on Mars absorb the Sun’s heat, so it is generally warm on the surface. When frost forms at night, it would melt and be released as water vapour by day.

  5. Extra Interesting Information Mars consists of minerals , such as silicon, oxygen and metals, in which all make up rock . Much of the rock that lies on Mars is quite similar to Earth rock. Did You Know... That about 4 billion years ago, scientists suggested that Mars was struck by a Pluto-sized body, due to the large basins that were created and also covered most of the land. Mars has approximately half the diameter of Earth. Even though Mars is bigger than Mercury, Mercury has a higher density. The colours that Mars has, are because of the minerals. The largest mountain on Mars, is called Olympus Mons, and it is a dormant volcano.
