Review • Independent variable (x) = x axis = domain • Dependent variable (y) = y-axis = range • Examples: • Identify the independent and dependent variables.
Rate of change/slope • Rate of change = SLOPE= • Change in dependent variable (y2-y1) vertical rise • ________________________________ = _________ = _____ • Change in independent variable (x2-x1) horizontal run
Finding Slope Using a graph • P310: • Remember: slope = rise/run • On your own paper, plot the following points. Then, find the slope 2 ways. • Just by looking at the graph (rise/run) • Using the formula for slope: y2-y1 / x2-x1 • (4, 3), (-1,1) (0, 4), (2, 1) • (-1, 5), (4, 2) (-4, 2), (1, 2) • (-2, 1), (3, 4) (2, 1), (2, -4)
Slopes of lines • Horizontal Line = 0 slope • Vertical Line = No slope/Undefined • A line with a positive slope slants upward from left to right. • A line with a negative slope slants downward from left to right.
Let's practice!!! In-class practice: Worksheet 6-1, #4-12, 16-21 • After our practice, we’ll play a short review game to test your new knowledge of SLOPE.
