  3. Why? • A “common” professional development opportunity for Tuolumne County Teachers • Learn about the transition from CST’s to CCS’s. • Acknowledge the great work our teachers do in supporting the students of our county.

  4. By the time CCS rolls in... • Presidential Election • Gubernatorial Race • State Board of Education • Sunset of STAR test • New Smarter Balanced Assessment • Reauthorization of NCLB • Growing interest in Education Reform

  5. What’s the secret to success for our students?Let’s ask a teacher...

  6. What are the Common Core Standards? • Adopted by the SBE in November 2010, including only 15% of former standards. • English language arts and mathematics, social science, science, and technical subjects. • Foundational skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening for any creative and purposeful expression in language. • Prepare students to be college and career ready with defined end-of-year expectations.

  7. Intended consequence... • The kindergarten through grade 12 standards provide a progression of knowledge and skills that prepare students to graduate from high school and be ready for college and careers.

ELA and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects • The Common Core State Standards for English–Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects define what it means to be a literate person in the 21st century. • Students who master the standards will be fluent readers, critical thinkers, informative writers, effective speakers, and engaged listeners. • They also will use technology as a source of information and a means of communication.

  16. Legislation Required • ABX4 2 (signed in July, 2009) suspended the adoption of instructional materials and framework until 2013-2014. • SB 70 (2011) extended the suspension until 2015-2016 • Inst. Mat. $ went into flexible spending

  17. Implementation Dilemma... • We are working with an expired adoption cycle. • The STAR Test expires in the spring of 2013. • Smarter Balanced implemented for all students in the fall of 2014.

  18. Proposed LegislationAB 250 (Brownley) • Extends the STAR sunset date to 2014 • Establishes a faster timeline for adoption of new frameworks by 2012 (math) and 2013 (ELA); and instructional materials by 2016 (math) and 2018 (ELA)

  20. Proposed LegislationSB 140 (Lowenthal) • Allows the State Superintendent to approve supplemental materials that would compliment current adoptions until the new instructional materials are adopted. • District could use flex $

  23. Get Tech-Ready! • All students in grades 3 - 8, and grade 11 will be tested using Smarter Balanced beginning in the fall of 2014. • Smarter Balanced includes formative and summative assessments.

  24. Get Tech-Ready! • The formative assessments promise to be VERY different than the multiple choice format we have become accustomed to. • There will be a variety of ways for a student to demonstrate proficiency.

  25. Get Tech-Ready! • The computer adapted test is INTUITIVE. After a student selects a response, the computer selects from an item bank of over 200 possible “next questions” for each student.

  26. Get Tech-Ready! • Smarter Balanced WILL used computer adapted testing. • School Districts will receive a technology readiness survey from the CDE as early as January: hardware, software, bandwidth, staffing, electrical systems, etc.

  27. Get Tech-Ready! • A “system architecture” of each assessment will be available for review in January, 2012 • The system will be “built” in February, 2012 • Nationwide field test in 2012-2013

  28. Get Tech-Ready! • If school districts are not fully equipped to provide technology requirements for testing, a paper version will be issued, as long as the district has submitted a strategic plan to address tech requirements by 2017. • After 2017, paper testing will not be an option.

  29. Here’s what I like about the new assessment: • The test incorporates formative assessments...finally! • Teachers and students will get immediate feedback. • Not confined to multiple choice.

  30. Here’s what I like about the new assessment: • Test item difficulty is based on student’s current level of understanding. • There will be a digital library of assessment resources for teachers to pick and choose from.

  31. Here’s what I like about the new assessment: • While the technology requirements are formidable, integrating technology is inevitable. • Time, at the moment, appears to be on our side.

  32. #4. Ongoing Transition & Professional Development Although California's 1997 academic standards share many similarities in content and design with the new CCSS, it will take several years to implement the new standards. Renew our motivation and refresh our inspiration.
