  2. 1) self-government • Control of the government of a state by its own citizens

  3. 2) bicameral • A legislative body that has two branches, chambers, or houses

  4. 3) delegate • A person chosen to act for or represent others; representative

  5. 4) naturalist • A person who studies or is an expert in natural history, especially zoology or botany

  6. 5) palisades • Fences made of sharpened stakes

  7. 6) tabby • A building material composed of ground oyster shells, lime, and sand, mixed with salt water

  8. 7) crackers • A group of what plantation owners called “undesirable people” who moved from Virginia and the Carolinas to the middle and western parts of the colony
