  8. In 1830, the Indian Removal Act was passed by Congress, forcing several tribes to move west of the Mississippi River even though they had assimilated like the white Anglo Saxons of the time… Why? The land was ideal for growing cotton

  9. The Cherokee Nation Trail of Tears In 1838, the US Army drove more than 15,000 Cherokee to the west.

  10. The Cherokee were forced onto a reservation in present-day Oklahoma. It took them several months to move west, while thousands died along the journey.
