  1. All About Eve Students will understand the context of the film and some essential features

  2. What do we know about the world of the film from this shot?

  3. Historical Context • Set during 1950s after end of WWII • America was experiencing an economic boom in particular the film industry • However, there was an overly conservative attitude in America. • There was a strict Production Code that films needed to comply to in regards to content and All About Eve was scrutinized and a number of edits had to be made

  4. Historical Context • This is important in regards to the way women were portrayed – powerless with their only wish to serve men. • Morally – in the way good and evil was represented. Evil characters couldn’t be “rewarded” and gain sympathy from viewers. • Sexuality: Lloyd and Karen are shown to be sleeping in separate beds. Nothing more than a chaste kiss between heterosexual characters.

  5. Structure • Circular Narrative– begins and ends at the same point and the narrative goes back in time to explain how they got to that point. • Interesting as we as viewers know where the characters end up and are left wondering and watching how they got there. Building of suspense in a way.

  6. Style • Multi-voiced narration: Addison, Karen and Margo • Three different characters all filling in their observations about Eve. Almost like a documentary that offers a biography of Eve. • Why these three? • All have an individual investment in Eve’s career rise. They all were manipulated by or used her to help themselves in Addison’s case

  7. Style • There different perspectives given about Eve as they all see a different side to her at various parts of her climb to the top. • Each character has a distinctive voice and provide good contrast to different parts of theatre world. However, none are completely objective, they have all been limited by perspective, circumstance and bias.

  8. Style & Structure • Link between narration and circular narrative… • Effective to message of the film as the use of flashbackand narration gives characters ability to use hindsight as they retrospectively explore the narrative and Eve’s rise from obscurity to stardom.

  10. Writing • When writing an essay it is good to be able to briefly explain the context. • In 15 words write a single sentence that explains the context of the film.
