The Value of a T&L@UCSD degree • These degree programs allow students to • Remain full-time educators while completing graduate studies • Develop research skills relevant to studying pressing issues in education • Address local educational concerns through systematic study • Join a network of local educators committed to practitioner-led educational reform
Teaching & Learning Program Goals • To provide professional educators with the opportunity to conduct research-on-practice. • To further changes which lead to more equitable and excellent education for all students, preschool to post-secondary, by addressing specific local problems that have national implications for teaching and learning • To support effective teacher leadership and professional development, through graduates who will provide innovative and effective pre-service teacher preparation and in-service professional development.
Who Should Apply to UCSD’s Teaching & Learning programs ? • The Educational Doctorate in Teaching and Learning The Ed.D. program is designed for experienced educators who wish to expand their knowledge of discipline-specific pedagogy, research methodology, and education reform with the goal of assuming leadership in teacher preparation and teacher development. • The Master of Art in Teaching and Learning: Curriculum Design The M.A. program is ideal for classroom teachers who wish to engage in an intensive professional development experience in which they gain knowledge of the research literature on teaching and learning, and who wish to develop their expertise as teacher-researchers and teacher leaders.
Education Studies and Affiliated UCSD Faculty Research programs currently underway among EDS faculty: • social networks and visionary school reform • equity of access and persistence in linguistically/culturally diverse society • desegregation, institutionalized racism, and the everyday production of inequality • the language, culture and education of Deaf people • distributed cognition and learning • cultural communities and family practices • uses of educational technology in teaching and learning Ed.D in Teaching and Learning Alumni and their dissertation topics Department of Education Studies Ed.D Faculty Affiliated UCSD Faculty in Departments of: • Anthropology, Biology, Chemistry, Cognitive Science, Communication, Computer Science, Ethnic Studies, Linguistics, Literature, Math, and Sociology
Program Costs • The cost of the five- quarter Year 1 Ed.D program (and MA), is approximately $13,000. Program begins mid-June. • The cost for the Ed.D program for Years 2 to 4 (three quarters per year) is approximately $13,000 a year. • Teaching & Learning students typically receive funding support from UCSD, in the form of loans, fellowships, or grants, averaging $10,000 per year.
Ways to Fund Your Graduate Degree • Graduate students are eligible for financial aid assistance. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA, is the first step in the financial aid process.
