Why are we here? • What are the challenges that face classroom teachers that aren’t always acknowledged? • How do I help myself stay healthy? • East Columbia Collaborative Mentor Program received funds from OEA Choice Trust grant to fund the development of ongoing, focused, research-based professional learning and instructional mentoring tools for beginning educator instructional mentors to use with their mentees specifically focused on promoting well-being, resilience and collective care to mitigate the impact of chronic stress.

What are Vicarious Trauma and Compassion Fatigue? Jigsaw • Form groups of 3 • Each person reads one article and looks for information to answer the above question • Share your answers with your group and cite evidence from the article • Write notes on the Graphic Organizer/ Capture Sheet • Prepare for large group discussion

Self Care Questionnaires • Review your questionnaires: • Any new thoughts in light of what we have learned in the first hour? • Write your thoughts at the bottom of the paper.
Self Care Gauge:Behavior – Physical - Emotional • 1 2 3 4 5 • Write down three or more signs you are getting overloaded with stress, when you know you are in the Yellow Zone.
Equanimity • Ability to engage and be present • To be calm in times of stress • To return to baseline quickly • How to stay in the Window of Tolerance • How to increase the range of the Window of Tolerance
What can you do about stress? • Talk with your group and answer this question • Write down possible solutions: one per post-it. • Share the solutions with the whole group.
What can YOU do about stress?Finding your Sweet Spot • Pull together what we’ve been talking about: • Self-care questionnaires • Self-care gauge • Solutions for stress • What are you going to do? Make a plan for finding equanimity.
Questions to ask yourself: • 1. What was a recent stressor? • 2. How did I handle it? (Self Care Gauge) • 1 2 3 4 5 • 3. Why did I handle it that way? • 4. What will I do next to take care of myself? • 5. What will I do the next time this situation or a similar situation occurs?
Next Steps • Take care of yourself. • Answer questions on the Google Classroom each week. • Contribute one article, cartoon, podcast, TEDtalk, etc to the google classroom and write about why you selected it. • Respond to a few of the posts.
