Professional Interest • Obesity is a world wide issue affecting many people out in our society.
What is the problem? • Obesity is increasingly becoming an important public health concern among all age groups, which is associated with numerous health effects (Silihu, 2009). • 60 percent of the U.S population does not participate in physical activity • More than 19 million Americans are overweight and obese in this country (Doane, 2010).
Rhetorical Timing • Obesity has been going on for two decades. • 300,000 deaths each year in the U.S are attributed to obesity (Stein, 2004). • Obesity affects our society by contributing to multiple elements of health and well-being (Cavasos, 2011).
Causes: • family genetics and lifestyle • psychological problems • social and environmental factors • sedentary past time • technology • dietary factors & lack of exercise • lack of sleep
Effects: • Hypertension • Coronary heart disease • Diabetes • Psychological effects
Solutions • Changing eating habits • Physical activity • Reducing television & computer time • Learning portion sizes • Eating daily fruits & vegetables • Drinking less sugary drinks
Community Connection • Who need to hear about my research? • People interested in learning more about obesity • Those people who are unaware of the different health effects obesity can cause • Everyone can learn about obesity, even if they are not obese. • The information can help out a friend, family member, or a co-worker who needs more information on the topic.
