  4. Course requirements are an accumulation of successful, piano programs from throughout the country. • If you follow these organized steps, you will succeed. But you must remain focused, keeping your eyes on your goals.

  5. Setting Goals • Those that are determined for you • Those that you yourself are determined to reach • Those that you would like to reach but can’t (for the time being)

  7. Prioritizing • Family • Responsibilities/Obligations • School • Practice • Research/Study • Attending Concerts • Career Development • Work • Minimum/Maximum time • “Free” Time • Needed –vs– wanted

  10. Practice • When beginning a new work: • Correct notes • Correct rhythm • Correct finger numbers • Memory • Auditory • Visual • Tactile • Muscle Memory • Theoretical Comprehension • Form • Tonal Centers • Memory Spots

  11. Memory continued • Different stages of memory: • Initial • Retention • Recall • Memory will be challenged • Performance Anxiety • Trust in your memory • Develop your memory (daily work)

  12. Practice (cont.) • Technique • Means for musical expression • How is the music constructed? • How do you want it to sound? • How do you get what you want? • Musicality • Dynamics, tempi, following the markings • What does the composer want? • What do you want? • Express your ideas!

  13. Practice • Slowly • Fast • Set daily goals and strive to reach them continually (practice journal) • Daily routine • Same time each day? • Daily –vs– large amounts in a few days • Different amounts of time? • 4 hours a day
