What is Engineering? • What does Engineering look like? • What do Engineers do? • Advance Ideas • Put Science into reality • Apply mathematics to reality • Make Life Better • Create solutions to problems
Engineering Design Process Ask Imagine Improve Plan Create
Engineering in the Classroom • How can this apply? • Don’t want to add to my already overburdened day • Cost is an issue • Know-how
Create a Critter • Mechanical Engineering • Problem-solving • Artistic nature and motor-skills • Synthesis of comparative anatomy and differentiation.
Supplies • Other supplies for the classroom • Markers • Crayons • Extra strips • Extra fasteners • Feathers, • Google eyes Group • File Folder • Paper • 5 Poster board strips (3 cm x 22 cm) • 12 brass fasteners • Scotch tape • Scissors • Hole punch • Design Challenge Card
Create a Critter Design Challenge • Ask: Can you team create a critter that uses at least two different types of mechanisms for movement? • Imagine:Discuss what your critter might look like. Be sure to listen to everyone on your team. • Plan:Use the pencil and paper to draw a critter, using at least one idea from each person on your team. Decide which parts of the critter will move. • Create:Once you have a plan. Collect your supplies. Create your critter. • Improve:Do your moving mechanisms work the way you wanted? Do you need to make any improvements? Work together to find solutions.
