Whatis a wave? Creatingenergy with theocean • A wave is a reaction of movementtothe mixture of certainsubtancesfound in thewind and theoceanssurface. • We are ableto use thatconstantmovementtocreateenergy.
Whatistidal? • A tidalisthemovement of currentsalongtheocean, therising and falling of largebodies of water. • A tidalisformbecause of themoonsgravitationalatraction. • Sincethemoon and theearthatracteachtoother, themoonpullseverythingonearthtowardsit, theearthholdsonontoeverythingexcepttheocean.
Description • This type of energy (tidal & waves) comes from seas & oceans that are usually recovered from water turbines with the movement of waves and tides that are produced in the water. In Ecuador it should be a good idea putting this turbine technology in any coast of the country.
Renewableor Non-renewableenergysource? • Tidal and waves is a renewable energy because it uses water which is at least 70% of the Earth´s surface and is not a limited resource for example like fossil fuels. This form of energy is a motion type of energy because it needs the power from the movement of waves and tides to create energy recovered with water turbines.
Where and how can weharnessit • This energy source is found on the movement from water in oceans and seas. With this movement produced, they invented a thing called water turbines that use this motion from water (tides and waves) and when they pass through this turbine they create movement that motors the generator inside that produces energy for a whole population.
Stored and Release energy • The energy is stored in the oceans as thermal energy, also as kinetic energy (waves and currents) and in chemical and biological products. • Tidal and waves energy is released with the motion from the water that later transforms to other types of energies. For example it is transform to sound energy from the movement of waves that crush with the coast.
History • TIDAL ENERGY: • 787: simple technique of a waterwheel by the Spanish, French, and British • 1966: “La Rance” tidal power plant went in operation. • 2001: British Parliament states “the world can no longer neglect the massive potential of wave and tidal energy” • 2002-present: Large investments in research and prototypes spark proposals in Turkey, China, and United States; among others • WAVE ENERGY: • 1799: First patent of a device designed to use ocean waves to generate power • 1910: First oscillating water column was built by Bochaux-Praceique to power his house • 1940s: Yoshio Masuda experimented with many concepts of wave power • 2004: Wave power was delivered to an electrical grid for the first time
Today • Barrage Tidal Power: Rance coast Station: • Located on Rance Coast, France • 750 meters long • 24 Turbines • Capacity of 240MW • Annual output of 600GWh • Supplies 0.012% of Frances power supply. • Opened 1966
Advantages and disadvantages • Advantages: • 1) Potential-The planet we live in is mostly ocean • 2)Quantity-Produces a lot of energy no matter how small the wave is, • 3) No visual difference- • Disadvantages : • 1) Because of the climate conditions it cant work • 2)Sometimes a wave can change its size, it can be higher and depending on the device, this may damage-money • 3) the energy somehow has to be transported to land or cities by using an underwater cable. This underground cable is not easy to put and maintain. It is expensive.
Economicimpact • Implementingenergy and tidalwaves turbines, is a projectthatshouldlast at leat ten year. • Itwillactuallycost a lot of moneythatwill come fromthegovernmentorthecompany. • Natural disasters or harsh climate conditions can damage the device, the generator. • When this happens companies lose money in a device which nature just damaged. All of this has big possibilities of happening or not happening, but there are other things that are negative aspects for this energy source application. • Mainly since the energy source can be located either on shore or on the ocean itself, the energy somehow has to be transported to land or cities by using an underwater cable. This underground cable is not easy to put and maintain. It is expensive. Because of this the investment increases in a 20% of the total amount. But the resutls are magnificent because it can provide a hole town with energy and evade other expenses for the government. The consumer will have to pay the same amount of energy as usual as for electicity.
Environmentalimpact • This energy source interacts with the environment in a good way because: • it doesn’t pollute earth in any step of the process • This energy source is not like fossil fuels plants that produce green house gases, acid rains or global warming • This type of energy source is beneficial to our environment because it’s a way of producing energy for us without damaging our home. • Now a days there are studies been done to determine if the device that is use to generate power affects any kind of fish or the food chain.
Future of the energy source • In thefuture, thecoming of theenvironmental crisis willmakewaves and tidalenergyone of themostproductiverenewablesources. • Energytakenfromwaves and tidalmovementwillmuchexpensierand everyonewould look tohaveit. • On of themajorrenewablesources, specially in Ecuador.
ECUADOR-≈MICPA≈ • Where? • . In Ecuador it isagood idea putting this turbine technology in any coast of the country. For example, • Esmeraldas, Manabí, Guayas, Machala or Loja are possible habitats in which this plan can be done. • Out of all this places, we think Manabí is the best place because • it has 350 kilometers of costal line which ¼ of it is not developed like the main beaches. • Additionally it has powerful waves that help to harness more energy than other beaches. This space would be great to include the turbines in order to support or even replace the main source of energy in Ecuador that is fossil fuels and rather depend on a renewable source like tidal and waves. • How? • Withthehelpof ≈MICPA≈ and Ecuadorsgovernment.
Why Ecuador? Future • Since Ecuador is a country which its population is growing at a very fast rate, soon we won´t be able to depend only on fossil fuel (non-renewable) that is the main resource of power for the whole country. This idea of having water turbines in the ocean and replacing or using as an auxiliary resource when fossil fuel are gone or little amount is left, is the best to fulfill Ecuador´s shortly coming future.
Why≈MICPA≈ • Our company should be chosen over other companies that use different energy sources because our proposal resource is tidal and waves that is an renewable energy which means it would fulfill Ecuador´s energy needs until our grand-grand children are born or even more. • Second, it is little expensive to build water turbine equipment at first, but in long term this last for many decades and operating costs are low and usually come from maintenance making the population develop while they receive lots of energy to progress. Third, the energy is free – no fuel needed, no waste produced of any kind from this company or the water turbines itself.
