What is Projectile motion? • Projectilemotion refers to the motion of an object projected into the air at an angle. • A projectile has a single force that acts upon it - the force of gravity • Basically projectile motion is when an object is released into the air. As soon as this happens it becomes a projectile. This object is then affected by factors(eg. forces) that will then determine how far and how high it will go.
What is projectile motion? • Any object traveling through the air • As an object travels from one place to another it follows a flight path (parabola/trajectory) • Forces acting upon the projectile • -gravity (pulling the object down to earth) • -air resistance (lifting the object up) • http://www.educreations.com/lesson/view/projectile-motion/628554/
Three main principles • Angle • -optimal angle 45 degrees • Speed • -the more force applied to the projectile the further it will travel • Height • -the higher the point of release the longer gravity takes to act upon it
Projectile motion applied to sport….. • In basketball projectile motion is used when they shoot a hoop. • Height of release is related to your height of hand when releasing the ball. That is i.e. flexion of the shoulder joint, extension of the elbow and flexion of the wrist • Angle of release. The ball is released at an angle at about 80 degrees when shooting at the hoop. • Speed of release. Is related to the amount of force summation created when force is applied to the ball.
Answers…. Page 77 • Speed of Release • 1. the direction the ball is travelling indicates initial vertical velocity is greater. The ball will travel high. Probably an easy fly ball and easy to catch. • 2. This gives more height and time in the air without a lot of horizontal distance. For example high jump • 3.This gives a greater distance to the projectile e.g long jump • 4.If they are using a bat/raquet of even just an arm, the apply the principles of force summation
Answers….. Page 78 • B. Angle of Release • 1.The release of a shot put would be around 40-45 degrees to get the best distance and time in the air. • 2.Poor distance due to too high a flight path • 3.Poor distance due to not enough time in the air to travel. • 4. Rank order lowest angle of release (1) to the highest (5) and why.
Answers…. Page 79 • C. Height of release • 1. Yes, they would. It assumes that they both apply the same amount or force on release and that angle, initial horizontal and initial vertical velocities were the same. • 2. As the height of release increases, the optimum angle of release decreases. • As the height decreases, the optimum angle of release increases.
