  1. Good Morning! Pick up a packet Take out a ½ sheet of paper and answer the questions below Write down at least 2 reasons why Western Europe was considered the Dark Ages after the fall of Rome? Why was the Catholic Church important during the Dark Ages?

  2. Causes of Feudalism • Europe was being threatened by invasions • With no strong central government, the people in Western Europe turned to local leaders for protection

  3. What is Feudalism? • Each role in the feudal system in Europe had something to give in return for something else • Think about it like a contract, where each person has certain rights and responsibilities Have you ever signed a contract? Have you ever heard of someone signing a contract? What did it involve?

The Feudal System • Read about the feudal system in Europe • Highlight facts that support the main idea as you read • Lord – landowner, granted a fief in exchange for military protection and other services • Fief - land • Vassal – person receiving a fief • Serf – people who could not leave the place where they were born, tied to the land, what they produced was given to the lord Feudalism revolved around the lords, the knights, and the serfs. It was a system that provided land for the vassals, protection for the lords and serfs, and food for everyone!

  7. Kings and Queens Kings and queens were the greatest lords of Europe, and all nobles and knights were their vassals. Why were the knights important to feudal Europe? Nobles Nobles were vassals of kings and queens. Many were also lords of lower-ranking nobles and knights. Knights Knights served their noble lords in exchange for land. How did the peasants benefit from feudalism? Peasants (Serfs) Peasants did not own land but worked on the land and gave what they produced to the nobles and knights

What was the ideal knight expected to behave and act like? • Read the documents about noblewomen and peasant women. How are the lives of noblewomen and peasant women different?

  17. Nobles pay knights to protect manor in land (fief) – 2 M&Ms per Knight

  18. Serfs must pay Nobles taxes for living on the manor – each serf give 3 M&Ms to Noble

  19. Knights provide protection for everyone (supplies) – 2 M&Ms per knight to teacher

  20. Noble must pay a loyalty tax to the King – 17 M&Ms

  21. The Church asks its follower to tithe (make an offering of 10 percent of your income) – you need to do this to go to heaven!!!

  24. The Knights tithe 1 M&M each

  25. Serfs tithe 1 M&M each

  26. Remember: Kings, Nobles, & Knights would not have felt sorry for serfs… therefore…NO SHARING!!!!
