HIIT in a Nutshell • Joint research institute of University of Helsinki and Helsinki University of Technology founded in 1999 • Operates through research programmes led by professor-level Programme Directors • Programmes operate through projects covering basic research, co-funded research, and EU activities • Partners include Finnish ICT and media companies, research institutions, international partners • Directors Prof. Martti Mäntylä (Advanced Research Unit), Prof. Esko Ukkonen (Basic Research Unit) • 15 research groups located in three sites • 170 researchers (24% seniors or post-docs), 8 staff
Current Things in Progress ... • Strategic Centre of Excellence in ICT • co-lead Future Internet • also participating in Flexible Services, Device Interoperability (+ Social Media) • Finland-ICSI Center for Novel Internet Architecture • HIIT reorganisation in the framework of the new university (TKK+HKKK+TAIK)
Objectives • Increase transparency between HIIT and NRC • Aim: NRC knows more of HIIT’s work, HIIT understands better the priorities of NRC • Facilitate information flow and coordination • Aim: Decrease transaction cost of initiating new joint research activities (bilateral or multilateral) • Forge a closer link between HIIT and NRC • Aim: True research partnership where both sides continually learn from and with each other

Partnership • "NRC Otaniemi" • NRC lablet located alongside the Finland-ICSI Center at HIIT • Provide a framework and a budget to enable research projects to be undertaken without negotiating contracts • Joint research infrastructure • Give a suitable place for NRC researchers to get away for a year to concentrate on doctoral research • Act as launch pad for NRC researchers to visit HIIT international partners (e.g., ICSI, Tsinghua)
