  2. Agenda • Provide overview of CENIC and NLR’s Optical Networks. • Define the tools and processes used to support these networks. • Identify some of the challenges in supporting large optical networks.

  3. CENIC Optical Backbone • DWDM Long Haul systems • Supports up to 80 channels in C-Band • Utilizes Cisco 15808 and 15454 ONS platforms • Supports CalREN Multi-tiered routed backbone • Provides dedicated lambdas for researchers

  4. National Lambda Rail • DWDM Long Haul / Extended Long Haul systems • Utilizes Cisco 15808/15454 Platforms • Provides dedicated 10GE/OC192 P2P circuits

  5. Network Management Systems • Individual NE provisioning tools • Cisco Transport Controller (CTC) • 15454 provisioning/troubleshooting • Cisco Wavelength Director (CWD) • 15808 provisioning/troubleshooting • Centralized NMS. Overview of all NE’s in the topology, across multiple spans in the network. • CTM - Cisco Transport Manager • Inventory Management • Fault Management • Performance Management • Configuration Management

  6. Performance Management • Performance Monitoring Reports • Real time and trend analysis reports • Provides Forward Error Correction Statistics

  7. Commissioning Data Reports • Provides detailed analysis of optical parameters • Run prior to and after maintenances and service interruptions

  8. Optical Spectrum Analyzer • Isolate specific wavelengths across a composite signal • Identify bad filters / broken transmitters / bad connections

  9. Challenges • NE connectivity during fiber cuts • complex routed solutions • Hybrid Management systems • Utilize CTM and CTC/CWD to provision and troubleshoot • Alarm correlation • NMS Upgrades to support new hardware • Documentation • Keeping provisioning data up to date • Deploying test equipment • Configuration History • Audit Trail
