Evaluation of ASD in Tangipahoa Amy Childress – School Psychologist Melissa Neeson – Social Worker Georgette Phares – Speech/Language Pathologist
Action Plan • Train staff in ADOS and other assessment methods • Develop a team and define its role
ADOS Training • Spring 2010: School Psychologists and Speech/Language Pathologist participated in district training by Debra Duhe • 2010-11 School Year: ADOS practiced and administered in teams of two
Assessment Process • Referral • Parent/teacher concerns, SBLC, RTI information • Red flags • Behavior: defiant, inattentive, does not listen to/follow instructions, physical violence, self-injurious behaviors, odd movements • Social: does not play well with others, keeps to him/herself • Communication: lack of verbal communication, does not ask for help
Decision Point Is autism a consideration?
Screening Data • Interview • Social history • Medical history • Clinical Observation
Decision Point What tests should be used?
Areas to Consider • Behavior/Social • Communication/Social • Sensory • Educational • Adaptive Behavior
ADOS: Why • Provides structured tasks that pull for characteristics of autism that may not be seen in an incidental observation • Allows for an observation in a different setting • Scoring organized into categories associated with autism • Modules allow for use with different functioning levels • Observing how children act during structured tasks helps inform recommendations for programming, interventions, and IEP goals
ADOS: When • If autism is suspected • When classroom or clinical observations and parent/teacher interviews do not provide enough information • Usually the second or third time the child is seen by the evaluators • In conjunction with other assessments
ADOS: How • Given in teams of two: School Psychologist and Speech/Language Pathologist • Both evaluators take notes and score • Compare scores and discuss discrepancies • Discuss overall impression • Report results
ADOS: Using results • Recommendations • Programming decisions
Additional Assessments • Behavior rating scales • CARS and GARS • Developmental/Cognitive • Academic • Speech/Language • Sensory Processing • Adaptive Behavior
Decision Point • Classification • Criteria • DD, Speech/Language Impairment, or ASD • Asperger’s • Programming recommendations
