  3. “This We Believe . . .and Now We Must Act” Create task force Read the research Visit other schools Attend conferences Reach out to community Communicate the vision Develop mission MY ADVICE: Be careful! A school can spend a lot of time with these activities and not accomplish any academic achievement!

  4. VISION AND MISSION “Without a shared vision and a mission statement that is understood and supported by all stakeholders, a sense of aimlessness may prevail and limited harmony exist.” -This We Believe . . .and Now We Must Act, p. 26 But what are other ways to create a sense of focus??

  6. Scribner Middle School VISION – “Believing and Achieving!” MISSION – SMS will educate all students to higher levels of academic performance in a safe, secure, and caring environment. Our school, in partnership with the community, provides opportunities that allow students to develop a positive self-image and make effective use of their diverse talents and abilities. (Let’s look at better examples. . .)

  7. SMS BELIEF STATEMENTS We believe it is our responsibility to apply every strategy and intervention possible for student learning. We believe all students should be given opportunities through a variety of relevant and challenging instructional techniques to learn and to demonstrate their accomplishments. We believe students, parents, and teachers share a working relationship to create an environment for maximum student achievement. We believe in fostering positive growth in behaviors and attitudes.

  9. PLC-Four, Critical Questions What are we teaching? How do we know if kids “got it?” What are we doing for those who didn’t get it? What are we doing for those who need enrichment?

Todd Whitaker’s “Three Categories of Teachers” • Mediocres -often negative, not self-starters -could be replaced by a more effective teacher • Backbones • -solid and consistent instruction • -remain positive most of the time • Superstars -problem solvers, positive effect on staff, self-starters -you simply can’t replace them!
