  4. We will look at three themes. • The Administration of Justice • The Effects of Guilt on One’s Conscience • The Danger of Reliance on Class Distinctions

  5. Symbol • Symbols are objects, characters, figures, or colors used to represent abstract ideas or concepts.

  6. We will look at three symbols in this book. • These themes are recurring (they are discussed more than twice in the book) and three are used to show how things are getting worse on the island. • The 10 little Indian figures • The storm • The food • The last is a clue to the murderer, so I can’t tell you what it is!

  7. Motif • Motifs are recurring structures, contrasts, or literary devices that can help to develop and inform the text’s major themes.
