Ren Notes: Roles of the Family By Luke Wilkins English 9 Period 1 http://honorsenglish09-10.wikispaces.com/Marriage+%26+Divorce
The Family • The typical family consisted the mother, the father, and the children. • Many people married early because there was a short life expectancy. • Since the average life span was close to 40 years of age, very few people lived to be grandparents. http://www.pizzagoni.com/family/activities.html
Men • Men had ownership of the land, but usually worked out of the house in fields or in merchant shops. http://www.twinrosesdesigns.com/Mens%20Clothing%20for%20Sale.html
Women • Women stayed home to run the house and take care of the family. • They did most of the cooking, cleaning, and tutoring of the children. http://bjws.blogspot.com/2010/10/those-robust-renaissance-women.html
Children • Children were thought of as small adults. • They dressed like adults and were spoken to as adults. • Many children entered the work force at age 8. Of course they had to keep themselves busy during those first 8 years, so they played with the few toys available to them. http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTxeyUfiTX8J9uQ3JeLVadLp0KrQMfP6uTEuzZNYsxARsPI2JWBmQ
Male Children • Some males did have an education. • If the family could afford it, they were sent to private schools. • Many boys were tutored at home or didn’t receive any education.
Female Children • Girls usually didn’t receive professional education. • They stayed home to help their mothers with the home. • Sometimes girls would be sent to work as servants in wealthy homes to help with the family’s costs. • Females were considered as children until they were married.
