  5. When Do We Do Outreach? • All seasons • Any time Where Do We Do Outreach? • Schools • Magnet Lab • Community Centers • Camps

  6. Why Outreach? • To engage students, teachers, parents, and the general public in the process of science. • To translate the nature of science in a way that is understandable to a voting populace. • To support scientific literacy starting with pre-kindergarten children. • To nurture partnerships that will sustain the engagement with science. • Because it is the right thing to do educationally, economically, and culturally.

How Do Large Facilities Support Quality Outreach? • By providing diverse opportunities to the broadest group possible. • By serving as a resource to enhance scientific literacy. • By engaging the community at large in activities that translate basic research. • By providing opportunities for the local community to interact with a research facility. • By building a community of learners who “see themselves” as part of such facilities.
